For those who played for Duff, there was no better in season speech than Harvard. Duff hated Harvard, and as a result, I still hate Harvard more than any other opponent to this day. Not a dry eye in the house every time we played them. He loved running it up if we could. Chills just thinking about it. I recall the 1983 tie with Harvard as a real disappointment (we were rolling along that season under Carter, ranked 2 or so, and had trampled the Ivies up till then). Maybe that was a part of his dislike.

Last time PL got an at large bid was 2015 - Fordham beat Army that year. That said I reached out to Brian McLaughlin from HERO to ask his opinion on HC getting an at large at 9-2 if HC were to beat Harvard and lose to Fordham. In a nutshell he said 9-2 in the PL is like 7-4 at other conferences. It's possible if Yale, Harvard, Monmouth, Merrimack finish with good seasons and it improves HC's Strength of Schedule. He saw a 9-2 McNeese State team get left out because of a weak SOS. Hopefully it's not an issue for HC, but just some context to the discussion down the road if it applies. I think Brian from Hero is spot on. Just go throw each conference and do the math to get to 24. Only way a PL team makes an AT-LARGE Birth in this era is a 10-1 season. WE HAVE TO RUN Have to run the PL table. Let’s get the at-large talk out of our heads.

Duff's dislike had to do with a game - I think a loss to Harvard - that he believes ate away at Rick Carter to which he never emotionally recovered. He blamed Harvard for that and never forgot it. And thus everyone that's ever played for him HATES Harvard.

I don't have direct info, even though my brother was a walk-on that year, but that was the type of loss (up 20-7 fairly late I believe) that eats away at a coach.

I remember that game too well. Very cloudy and overcast afternoon, November 9, 1985, before an attendance of 14,697. It was a very bad loss with Harvard winning 28-20. Also interesting to see the attendance at the Harvard -Yale game two weeks later at 54,647. What still sticks in my craw, 36 years later, is Joe Restic cackling to the media how he loves beating scholarship teams. The loss, with Restic being ungracious, in victory, and the subsequent tragic event to our coach, was reason enough for Duff wanting to smash Harvard. I agree with dharry’s assessment. The following year at Harvard Stadium, on September 27, 1986, HC showed no mercy and rolled it up and beat Harvard 41-0. This time Old Restic had tears in his eyes. Interesting in reading the article from the Crimson regarding the loss and the size of the HC line vs Harvard. www.thecrimson.com/article/1986/9/30/holy-fat-men-batman-pthe-harvard/

Yale Gtown Cornell Fordham Harvard - I've picked Yale and Monmouth last two weeks and happily lost; why not keep it going and be wrong again If "dharry" stands for "Dirty Harry" it would be fair to ask "Are you feeling lucky? Well are you punk?" You're not a punk but that's the movie line.🙂 Actually it's " Do you feel lucky ? Well do ya punk ? "

Successful onside kick. HB pass for a TD, 21-20 Harvard. Pick 6, 28-20 Harvard....thanks for coming....they'll be a much needed cocktail reception at the Fieldhouse.

We all were extremely happy when HC delivered the hammer in 1986 at Harvard Stadium. Well deserved payback!!
Wished we had scored 50.

I often signed off my Class emails with “be careful out there” which should bring back memories of Sgt. Phil Esterhaus:
P.S. Michael Warren was All-American for UCLA and I didn't realize he was only 5'11".
