HS basketball has been totally ruined. Only at the high end level Most public school leagues remain untouched by this nonsense, except for their players who leave for this decadence

I agree that most high school programs have not started down this cert slippery slope. It remains to be seen just how challenging the academics will be at these new academies, That is what will prepare scholar-athletes for the work they will face in college classrooms.

Most of these players plan to spend as little time as possible in any classroom, high school or college.

One guy, Cruz, will have been at 4 high schools. Taking his cue from several HC MBB "student athletes" from recent years perhaps.

While I don't like it, I realize that there is nothing I can do about kids going off to established private schools or pop up basketball factories. I don't know if Kanye's school is a legitmate academic institution or not--I hope it is. I also realize, however, that this has been the situation in hockey for quite some time and the world has not collapsed. I agree with hoops that most high schoolers are really not affected by this. Perhaps the quality of play has slipped a little because the superstars are gone, but for most kids they still get to play with their friends and compete for championships. I am a little confused by efg's comment that society has been ruined and that we want the values of the past. If by the values of the past, you mean a country where policies and corporate culture resulted in less pronounced economic inequality, I am all in. (EDIT: Now that I think about this, this was less inequality for white men, only.) If you mean the country where racial inequality was tolerated, where a women's place was in the home, where same sex couples couldn't marry, where police brutality was ignored, and where the press turned a blind eye to lots of misbehavior by politicians of both parties (and athletes), I can't say that I am in agreement. When we complain that the world was better when we were young, we just sound like bitter old folks. I know I slip into that, too, but I try to realize that for all the things I liked better "back in the day" there are lots of changes that have been great. That said, I don't understand why so many people want to get tattoos and so few want to even own a suit, never mind wear it on a regular basis.

Why, alum, your last point makes you sound like one of us "bitter old folks." (PS: I see "body art" as a type of self disfigurement, but it is the person's choice and if it serves a purpose for them, then I am OK with it.)

I know that. That is why I don't share those opinions with others very often.

I applaud the trust your post shows in those of us in the CROSSPORTS "family." You are always welcome to join us at my campfire (yup, that does go back a bit )

Obviously, recent hoopsters Pridgen and Lowder are in the 3 college realm with plenty of eligibility to add to that. I know many of the MBB guys have two high schools under their belt. Have any actually had four?

Not for nothing but Catholic High Schools played a major part in recruiting kids to their sport teams. Ive spoken to many parents who claim HS coaches approached their sons or daughters while in Jr. Heigh about playing for them & having their tuition slashed or waived. This all happened before all these mega school / teams came about.
Just my 2 cents

Just my 2 cents Yep, Digger Phelps would never have been the coach at ND had he not learned how to poach public school kids within a 75 mile radius of Hazleton, PA. Even in my hometown in the wilds of western NY, the small Catholic high school punched well above its weight back in the late 60s and early 70s by pulling in kids from all over, including some from hundreds of miles away. They were good enough that they actually got games against Power Memorial and, I think, Molloy -- in Olean! It's not that the cesspool stinks worse these days, it's just a whole lot bigger.

Exaggerating a bit; Pridgen played varsity ball for three. One however, was the town hs as an 8th grader (in some small Mass. schools that are grades 7-12, younger kids are eligible).

That is also true in NY but not in NJ. (IHA in Bergen County, NJ had to forfeit a County Title game because one of their seniors had played for a NYS high school team as an 8th grader). The one who reported it knew for 5 years but saved reporting it for a "special occasion."

Actually, in MA, school size doesn't matter. If the middle school/junior high are part of the same campus as the high school and share administration, middle school students are allowed to play high school varsity sports per MIAA
My old high school is one of the larger schools in central MA. A middle school has recently been rolled in. I don't know if my high school will allow it, but even though it's a bigger school, those kids are eligible per the state.
