A very generous HC benefactor auctioned off some of his wine collection a few years back, with the proceeds going to HC to renovate the old field house. (I suspect the proceeds were not used for such, and instead, the proceeds might be used to renovate and expand the soccer stadium. But that is only a hunch.)
A highlight of that Sotheby's auction was the collection of Chateau d'Yquem.
I receive emails from Sotheby's on upcoming wine auctions, and there is one tomorrow, of bottles from the collection of an important (but unnamed) American collector.
There are 14 bottles of d'Yquem up for auction. Lot #213 is a magnum bottle of Chateau d'Yquem, described thusly
^^^ Clearly, there is life after college for English majors, particularly those who took a course or two in creative writing.

I receive emails about Red Sox tickets at prices I would never consider. (See the mlb2021 thread) PP receives emails about wine auctions from Sotheby's. The question is whether he will pick up a case for the weekend.

Velveeta, I presume will go well with that vintage.

I'll bring a more modest bottle of wine--about $8.00. It will be aggressive without being truculent, with hints of parsnip and entrails, a subtle hint of paint thinner, and a finish reminiscent of boiled cabbage.

I ceased buying the good stuff when my senses no longer detected the patina of mahogany. As most everyone declares, 'its hell getting old'.

Wow.

Wow. I went to "wine academy" (3 or 4 days--not a formal university course) and to "Korbelization" (focused on wonderful Korbel Champagne--another 3 days) and the educators will tell you which of those flavors (and others) you should detect in the wine you are sniffing and sampling, and spitting out if you don't want to get smashed. I think I can do a half decent job discerning if a wine is good, but I'd never attempt with a straight face to suggest any such flavors in the wine. Some people do have expert palates-I am certainly not one of them. Guys on the spirits side of my old company referred to the more pretentious wine folks as "cork dorks". It was a great industry to be in, though....

They must have missed my $21,000. bid. Too slow on the mouse click. _________________________ High price for a single bottle apparently was for a jeroboam of Romanee Conti. Sold for $137,500. I did not bid because,... well, the prose was so underwhelming. I am not drinking anything with "weightless density". The palate needs to feel something, anything, when I swallow and gurgle.

My dog, after rolling in the grass, sometimes has an "amazing persistence on the nose." The association kept me from bidding.
What's bigger, a jeroboam or a nebuchadnezzar (sp.)?

Never heard of either one, but Googling reveals nebuchadnezzar to have the capacity of 20 bottles of wine; and a jeroboam to be 4.

One gurgles to cover the inside of the mouth with wine to appreciate more fully the flavors it contains.
