^ And now that Valentine has left SHU to run for Mayor of Stamford, his replacement is a bean counter hired to right the sinking financial ship that Valentine put SHU in. John Farrell? Farrell is too busy these days piloting his Lobster boat "Seaweed" out of Gloucester.

Farrell is too busy these days piloting his Lobster boat "Seaweed" out of Gloucester. But he is experienced at cleaning up Bobby V's mess . Useless piece of trivia: Valentine's father in law is Ralph Branca. If the name doesn't ring a bell he was the guy that threw the pitch to Bobby Thompson

You had to have heard it. It apparently was heard around the world or something.

You had to have heard it. It apparently was heard around the world or something. I got my son autographed photos of Bobby Thomson and Ralph Branca when they made an appearance together (one of many) years ago at Montclair State University in NJ. He was most gracious. Sadly, many forget just how good a pitcher he was.

Thompson claims that although the Giants were stealing signs that season (someone in bullpen tossing a ball up in the air was the signal) that he did not get a heads up on the homerun.

I think I read a stat yesterday that the Yankees had outscored the Pirates nearly 2-1 and still lost the series. I think the Astros were saying they wanted to do something similar (or frankly, have to) in order to beat the Sox.

The late Ralph Branca was a regular parishioner at the Church of the Resurrection in Rye, NY. He could always be found in the same pew at the 5:00 mass, which I would sometimes attend when visiting my dad. After his short pitching career came to a close, he ended up having a fairly successful insurance business. He was a member of the Westchester Country Club, although I don't recall how good a golfer he was. I think he also was married to the daughter of the owner of the Dodgers.
As for the famous home run, I seem to recall that the signal method was a buzzer, at least according to a WSJ story some years ago.

Shouldn't that be "Scots" with one "T?" Just asking.

Shouldn't that be "Scots" with one "T?" Just asking. Yes, the Scots were very frugal and did not use extra letters that aren't necessary in words like Thomson and Scot. I'm sure you want to know my favorite Scot. It's "(Hey!) Mr. Wilson!" from Dennis the Menace.

One thing I got out of that book is how overused the pitching staffs were in those days. Branca was pretty much done as a big leaguer after that season; it was the way things were done then.

Guess they thought that 4 letters was parsimonious enough.

I grew up across the street from Rev. Kilpatrick, a retired Scottish Minister. In the winter he wanted his driveway, walk and a path to his bird feeder and trash barrel (people burned their trash in those days) shoveled, all for a nickel. I was instructed by my Mother I had to do it and say thank you for the five cents. She would slip me a quarter afterwards.

JMO - What they should do is hire someone who actually gives a damn.

...about sports at Holy Cross, not only with sports in general or with his/her future career. Amazing how well the last two climbed the ladder on the back of their cumulative W/L record at HC. But they weren't here long enough to "own" the losing.

I pull this story out one more time . . . . . . a senior VP once gave me this advice: "Be sure to move to your next position within 2 years before your mistakes have a chance to catch up with you."

It was meant as such. Didn't take it . . . . and never made Sr. VP, just VP. Oh, he did follow his own advice as he was a living example of the Peter Principle but was able to retire before his stuff hit the fan. Personality plus which often goes a long way. Always helps if your boss likes you and even better if your boss' boss likes you.

aaa8316 Not an insider but have heard from a reliable source that the Athletic Committee has identified a number of good candidates and will likely make an announcement by the end of the calendar year. We’ll have to wait and see.

Create a positive attitude is the biggest task.
The biggest problem w/doing that is how many sports by definition will have poor records because the school is too small to support them.
