Of course, it is obvious that membership in the PL has cratered HC's academic reputation. At least we're still head and shoulders better than BC.

UConn and UMass would be wise to explore CAA football membership if the CAA is looking for such a member. Fordham should explore full membership if that’s an option.

If UConn and UMass come back to the CAA, I think you see a split with the Northern teams leaving with UNH, Stony Brook, Albany, Maine, UMass, and UConn starting their own conference. Nova could join them. America East football could definitely happen. And to be honest, I'd be all in for Holy Cross ditching the PL and going to the A EAST in all sports under such a scenario. You could sign me up for this A EAST football league: 1) UMASS 2) UCONN 3) UNH 4) MAINE 5) HOLY CROSS 6) MERRIMACK 7) ALBANY 8) STONY BROOK 9) FORDHAM 10) COLGATE Plus maybe then we could massage some relationships with these schools and get into a certain hockey conference.... I like the looks of this! I’d personally replace Merrimack with URI, but that’s just me. What do we have to do to make this happen?

I don't feel too much loyalty to American and Loyola, although they are fine institutions I'm sure and BU is local, but after about half my life watching HC play charter members Colgate, Bucknell, Lehigh and Lafayette in all sports, I'm not so sure I want HC to run off with a hot new league and leave the other charter members behind.
In Football HC has either five or six OOC games a year. More than enough to play higher level teams and move up the rankings, while offering a chance to compete for a league title even if we can't hire as skilled a succesor as Coach Chesney (how many are out there who can turn a sow's ear onto a silk purse wherever they go?).
In BB we get at least a dozen OOC games so the league isn't preventing HC from challenging itself. It's not fair to blame losing to UMass Boston on the PL.

It would be just our luck to jump to a new thrown together conference made up of schools malcontented in their current league, watch the PL pick up a quality replacement, and then see our new league disintegrate in a few years as schools with no roots see the grass as greener elsewhere.

Where will the money come from to pay the exit and entrance fees to hop to a new league? I'd rather spend the money to retain our Football and Men's Soccer coaches, the two winning sports we have right now.

Of course, it is obvious that membership in the PL has cratered HC's academic reputation. I haven’t heard the ‘cratered’ descriptor but it is hard to argue the PL has enhanced our academic reputation when in fact our reputation has declined since joining it. Most likely a meaningless observation on my part since our particular academic reputation is unrelated to any general academic reputation [to the extent that even exists] regarding our sports conference. Beyond that, I honestly don’t see CAA football wanting us AND I don’t see TPTB wanting to leave PL football. Thinking outside of the box, perhaps a move up to CAA would help us retain Coach Chesney. I think we’d win more recruiting battles v CAA members and frequently lining up against those teams would raise our game. Making the best of PL membership, at least we do get to play a large number of non-conference games (which is a very odd and backhanded compliment towards the PL but I’m fishing for a positive in staying in our football conference).

CAA would take Fordham as an all-sports member. Don't think they'd take them as a a football affiliate given they have so many already. Most Fordham alum I've spoken to lately are super super high on Kyle Neptune, their new MBB hire, so I think any serious discussions about the school dropping out of the A-10 are at least 3-4 years away.

I thought if you chant "safety school" at a sporting event it means that your college is far superior to the other? Because that happened the last time we played them at the DCU Center in basketball.

Anyway, Colgate's out, URI is in here in my ten-team league.

MIT, University of Chicago, Stanford, Duke, Vanderbilt, Johns Hopkins, Northwestern, Wake Forest, BC, Richmond, William and Mary, Villanova, etc. do too.

If this was to happen, the CAA would likely be looking to fill that spot. Would HC consider it? Mmm… In short...no. Note: HC would be a much better fit as a football affiliate in the CAA than we would as an all-sports member. And the CAA already has plenty of those. Chances are the CAA will be looking to add an all-sports member to backfill JMU. Names like Furman, Campbell and Monmouth will be highly likely to be tossed around. Maybe even Fairfield as this was rumored to be in the works a few years ago. Not sure why SBU and Albany never pulled the trigger on becoming all sports CAA members (state pressure or a desire to stay with Binghamton?). When they were added to the football league in 2012, the reason given was that their complete entrance was only going to be delayed a couple years because Albany was hosting the A East basketball tournament a year or two out. But haven't heard even a sneeze about it since. Tough to see HC joining an all sports league where there are so many southern trips. Richmond, W&M, Elon, College of Charleston, UNC Wilmington say hello; on the other hand, it's pretty much a wash between who we have now and Northeastern, Hofstra, Delaware, Drexel and Towson. Pretty clear why UNH, Maine, URI, Albany and Stony Brook are in America East. Don't see it unless the league breaks up or becomes the kind of league where you only have to travel to far away schools once every two or three years. I wonder what homework JMU has done to prove/disprove moving up is viable? They aren't going to get too many more fans in their stadium (sure, they could charge more); and expanding it is pricy. The Sun Belt doesn't exactly get big tv payouts, just better guarantees for playing ACC schools, etc. On the other hand, you wonder why they just built a fantastic new basketball arena to play in the CAA when everyone in the Patriot League save for Navy would have been happy as can be to play where they used to play.

I know a little about JMU because I have some relatives who went there. They've put a lot into athletic facilities. In 2011 they spent 62 million dollars upgrading their football stadium and it now hold about 26K (and they sometimes sell out). Their basketball arena holds 8500. Of course, the student body is about 20K so they should have larger facilities. I know they have some loyal and wealthy alums (I've met one who has a building named after him), but I don't know how much of their improvements are donations versus debt. I've read they only have an endowment a little over 100 million, which is tiny.

Is it remotely possible that HC merely does not want to emphasize its athletics to the degree of other schools such as the state universities and private schools in the CAA & BE? God bless Villanova which over the years has established a fine reputation for its academics. This is not a knock on the academics of these schools but more of a philosophical statement about the size, the importance, the role of athletics in the life of the school. In addition, at which point do colleges reach diminishing returns in terms of costs and integrity of their academic standards? No offense to anybody. My roommate was a highly recruited athlete and a superior student who is an attorney. Athletes are not a priori sub par students.I respect and honor any alum, non-athlete or athlete, who has a degree from our fine college. However, IM(not so)HO it is a question of emphasis.
