So last since ASU has a brand new rink being built! Thanks You're welcome. Now watch Coach Riga exceed expectations in the country's lowest ranked rink. Fortunately the skating is done on the ice sheet and not in the stands or player's lounge, and ours is just as frozen as theirs.

Foley, What motivates your constant pounding of HC ?(except football) What motivates you guys not recognizing that the school has neglected many programs? It is always excuses with you guys instead of action. They do a major expansion to the athletic department and don't even touch their hockey rink which is an embarrassment? Football program has visiting teams in a tent at halftime. That is stuff you see at the D-3 level. Would you like more?

It's Sunday morning and with the change of time I've got some time to kill before Mass. Some thoughts: Foley brings an alternate view of Holy Cross athletics and that's not a bad thing. But maybe my memory is just wrong, I don't remember him being such a contrarian when he first posted here. I believe he has a story as to his change of mindset but likely doesn't want to share it publicly. In any case, we learned at Holy Cross to listen to other views we disagreed with and he does do that for us. So, he brings value even if that value is just to get your heart pumping faster in the morning. NAD however is able to "disagree agreeably" (which they tried to teach me as a young claims adjuster . . . . obviously not successfully or at least it didn't stick) and his posts are invariably well thought out. Yeah, we have to try to get him an honorary degree. Now here's where you may think I'm just being cranky. I kind of agree with Foley. As I've posted many times, in my career it was driven into me that one needs to be accountable and to strive for success. Hard work was and is a "given." You get no credit for "trying." No "participation trophies." Results count (though I hate the "you are what your record says you are" mantra). Success includes progress or trends in the right direction. I really don't like presidents, board members, athletic directors, coaches or players who "mail it in" (R.I.P. = "retired in place") or don't have any real values. For me, we now have over $1 billion endowment. That's just a number and as been pointed out many times by Phreek, that's not all spendable on things we'd like it to be spent on since much is directed toward specific things. But, going back to my point above, if you aren't going to actually do the things (ethical and legal) necessary to win, don't just go through the motions. Focus on a few things that you can be excellent in and do that. Holy Cross remains focused on being a liberal arts college. Wisely, it is not branching out to other areas. The same should be for athletics. You either have and use the resources to excel, or don't do it. Let's see how Riga and Nelson can do with a little more time. I agree that if we want to play men's hockey, it should be a first class operation. Nelson has the tools to succeed, so it's up to him now. Riga's tools? Not so sure he's not competing with one hand behind his back. Pearl was apparently an excellent one-handed boxer.

I think most people here are painfully well aware of HC’s deficiencies in athletics. If that’s your only motivation for being here, your work here is done. Safe travels.

Had a wonderful weekend at Notre Dame. Despite the results, I felt like the team did as well as we can reasonably expect. With the exception of two transfers, Coach Riga has inherited FHC Berard’s team and this year should be the floor for his tenure. He and his staff have already been more aggressive and successful to date in terms of getting verbal commits, and that should bode well for the next couple of seasons. Facilities are a concern and I agree with B Foley’s commentary in that regard. The new video scoreboard is a step in the right direction and I hope the college follows thru on FAD Marcus Blossom’s initiative to develop plans to improve/expand the locker room and video / lounge room. I do agree with other posters that hockey alums, family and supporters should fund any improvements to the current facilities. A new coaching staff and some incremental improvements to the Hart Rink will hopefully get us back to being a strong program within Atlantic Hockey.

The recruits coming in are not coming from the best junior leagues. They are coming from teams that might seen 2-3 kids go D-1 in a year. There are some diamonds in the rough but they tend to be Canadiens that have been getting overlooked. One example of this is Cale Makar and him going to UMass. (He blew up his final year of juniors but wasn't playing in the best league) This isn't a Riga thing as it has been an issue for 15 seasons or so now with just meh recruiting.

Agreed. With scouting services like Neutral Zone, it is very difficult to find the diamonds in the rough. Riga got a number of verbal commitments from kids still in high school, so it will be interesting to see what junior leagues they go to following graduation. But not enough kids coming in from the USHL and BCHL. Next year’s class projects to have one from each league, plus 2 from Brooks in the AJHL (where Cale Maker played). The rest will be NCDC and NAHL players.
