Unless Mora has been spending his time out of coaching studying up on new offensive and defensive concepts and/or is going to bring in innovative coordinators, this will be a disaster.
Dated NFL schemes with inferior talent is not going to work.

Glad to see my tax dollars at work. $1.5-$1.7M to be a football coach of one of the worst teams in the country? Definitely a strange hire but UConn has to think outside the box, I guess.

Unique situation that UConn might benefit from - he's starting imme as an assistant and therefore can recruit from today - it's very simple in college sports, it's all about recruiting and now they have a chance to save this recruiting cycle with the early signing date in December

He may not be the highest paid coach in college football but he will likely have the highest $$$ per win in all of college football

UConn's press release highlights both his pro experience as well as all of the college kids that played for him that wound up in the pros; for example, Under Mora, 30 Bruins were selected in the NFL Draft, including at least one first rounder in every year except one. The 30 NFL Draft selections were the most of any Pac-12 program during that time.

UCONN left one detail out of this avalanche of praise for Mora. He helped an old lady across the street in 1989. These press releases and coach bios are getting way over the top.

Considering the poor shape the program is in to get a guy like Mora is a big pick up for the school. Yeah they over paid but if they are going to keep that program they will need a coach with name recognition. Give him 2 years to put some wins on board and he will be gone.

His .605 winning percentage at UCLA is better than anyone who's been there since Terry Donahue, including Chip Kelly. .605 at UConn would be remarkable! So would any reporter asking him a serious question that had the word "playoff" in it!

I'm also a CT taxpayer. UConn has tried a number of approaches: the brash newcomer (Bob Diaco), the older college guy with a good reputation (Paul Pasqualoni), the re-tread (Edsall), and now the marquee name (Mora). They've all failed up to now, and I'm not to optimistic about this one.

Jim Mora Sr. Not the new UConn coach, but his Dad.

Like you, I live in Connecticut. As you know UConn sports always makes headlines in the news media. UConn never has any problems attracting a big name coach. Let's face it, UConn football has been a loser over recent years, but, yet, a high profile coach, like Jim Mora is eager to accept the head coaching position. In addition, the mens basketball program briefly took a nose dive after Jim Calhoun left, but, yet, UConn had no problems luring a high profile coach like Dan Hurley to bring the program back to national glory. I know UConn pays its coaches a lot more than Holy Cross, but where is that money coming from? In addition, UConn also loves to boast about how great their athletes are academically. They're not only top notch athletes, but they're also at near or at the top of their high school class academically. Unlike Holy Cross, UConn has no problems recruiting top notch athletes because their athletic teams have a winning tradition. Plus, UConn has a proven reputation of advancing their athletes into professional sports.

The program took a nose dive after Calhoun but it picked up another national championship during the descent so that's not too bad. UConn has it going on. As long as UMass and UConn can fill their FB schedule they have a chance to rebound. The portal gives talented reserves at power conference schools, players UConn couldn't get out of high school, every incentive to transfer and play regularly.

Mora hasn’t worked as a football coach in any capacity since being fired during the season in 2017 by UCLA. He was 17-19 in his last three years there. Maybe he makes UConn a .500 team but I very much doubt it.

UMASS has their schedule for the most built out over the next 4 years. Each year they play an FCS team, a few MAC teams and some much tougher teams. I don't ever see them getting better than 6-6 over the next 4-5 years; getting to .500 quicker because of the transfer portal is certainly possible. I just don't see that happening because of their existing roster, yet another lost recruiting year, no fan base for their transfer to play in front of, etc.
I don't see it as a desirable place to land to get exposure for the next level.
I personally think Chesney can and will get an offer with a better chance to succeed. But it certainly doesn't matter what I think.

The worst squad in the country isn't exactly a desired landing spot for any decent transfers.
The only way Umess sees .500 ever again is by going back to 1AA.

I can see players at other schools wanting to transfer and play for a guy who was not only a "big time" college coach but, more importantly, a former NFL coach figuring he must know what it takes to get onto an NFL team.
They certainly could have made a worse choice. We'll see.

Rod Carey will almost assuredly be fired by Temple. I'd be curious if they would be interested in Chesney who is a native Pennsylvanian. Obviously a tough job, but one that launched four consecutive coaches to Power 5 jobs before Carey's flop
