I get the appeal of the FCS playoffs, and I'm thrilled we'll be going again, but they are a very awkward fit for colleges, particularly those in a colder clime. Thanksgiving, Final Exams, Christmas etc etc make them a tough time squeeze for players and fans alike. I suppose it is what it is, but it's not a perfect system by any means. Not sure there's a bettah solution given the #of teams involved though. Are you an Ivy League Administrator during the day per chance? Derek Bok is my Godfather.... As I said, it is what it is....gun to my head, I'd take playoffs ovah an Ivy Bowl game...but I see that appeal too. Football really isn't a sport made for a "playoff system" like hoop and other sports. Hypothetically, the HC football players could play 16 games this season....while it would be great for us as fans, it's a bit much for players, no?

Just search "Does anyone even cahheee anymore?" HS players who "win state" in Texas play up to 16 games. The boys will be just fine.

I don't think that's true actually.....though I could well be wrong....most states with longish hs football playoffs play about 7 or 8 regular season games and then maybe 3 or 4 playoffs games. I doubt they reach the 15/16 game total in most places.
Again, from an HC perspective, it's doubtful (now anyway) that we'll play more than 1 or 2 playoff games....but 15, 16 college games in a season is excessive imo for a variety of reasons.

I get paid by the school to be there...you recognize that right? Yes of course, but I assumed the photos were available for purchase by the logical market of players, friends and relatives. I felt good for you that you had the gig at Amherst/Williams where at least some families serve grey poupon at their tailgate spread and can afford discretionary spending. Do the schools prohibit re-sale of the photos they commissioned? A smart phone from the stands can't get the shots the credentialed photographers can so I can understand why there would be a market for the pictures. This year I haven't gotten a sale yet...but when those NESCAC families do spend, it is a nice chunk of change. It all depends on the school some have in the contract they own the photos and some don't care. I am not making a killing off of selling images.

Not sure there's a bettah solution given the #of teams involved though. Very true. I wish playoff games brought in the types of crowds that the games themselves deserve. As someone who traveled to Brookings, SD last year I'll tell you that was a once-in-a-lifetime type of experience. I was also at the other two playoff games in my lifetime (Monmouth and Villanova). And somehow a playoff crowd of 4,000 tends to have the "feel" of a regular season announced crowd of 7,000. Maybe it's because everyone who goes actually stays inside the stadium. Or is it because a regular season attendance figure counts season ticket holders that don't actually show? I don't know. I was at the UNH/Illinois State game back in 2014 (damn UNH football has dropped off) and they got 9487 before the renovation to the stadium. It was a good time and the game was right at the end of the fall semester on 12/20.

Brady played 20 games last year at age 43 and had enough left to throw the trophy to a tight end on another boat.

Just checked Hero Sports Bracketology and Herder has HC v. USD (South Dakota) in the opening round. URI v Sacred Heart. As he notes, there are probably 8 teams on the bubble for at large bids and a lot on the line this week. Still, aside from too many shockers this weekend, it looks like URI and SH are the only 2 schools in driving distance that we could play in the opening round. If those 2 do in fact play each other (and URI needs a W @ a good Elon team this week to guarantee an at-large bid or Bill & Mary could get it with a W against Richmond), we are getting on a plane if we don't play at Fitton. Might the committee give us an easier (and cheaper) flight destination? Maybe VMI? I'm sure it's somewhere in this thread but what's the typical dollar figure to win the bid to host a first round game? Might it be cheaper for HC to out bid the other school vs all the costs to travel to the likes of Vermillion, SD?

Also, I forgot to mention what I really really DON’T want to happen. If Monmouth beats Kennesaw this weekend, they lock up the Big South auto bid and Kennesaw gets an at-large bid. I really hope The committee doesn’t force us back to Long branch, NJ again. There are litany of reasons but mostly I just hope we get to play a new team in a new venue instead of Monmouth for the third time in 2 1/2 seasons. If Monmouth loses this weekend they are very likely out of the playoff picture.

While I don't believe there is an outright rule against it, the committee has historically always avoided rematches in the first round.
So highly doubt we play Monmouth.

No committee in their right mind would have us play Monmouth in the playoffs . . . . . at least not in a first round game.
Too lazy to look it up but I don't recall us playing URI in football (yes, basketball but that doesn't count) in the last 20+ years. We have played Sacred Heart. If it comes down to that, I would hope that we'd be the ones to play URI even in Kingston than Sacred Heart playing them. We've got the bona fides having won 3 championships. Maybe Sacred Heart at Fitton?
I'm not too concerned with all these "experts" predicting who will play whom. Not sure they know any more than many Crossporters.

I would like to see Bill and Mary win, Rhode Island lose and we get a home game against the Tribe- think it would be a great first round game

The host team picks up the operational expenses for the game, and has responsibility for reserving a bock of hotel rooms for the visiting team, but I believe the NCAA now picks up the travel costs for the visiting team. IIRC, the previous way, a host school had to bid high enough to cover travel expenses of the opponent. ESPN+ now has over 17 million subscribers, and I suspect the NCAA is getting enough ESPN revenue for broadcast rights to pick up the travel costs for visiting teams. The specs for the host schools for the Spring 2021 playoffs required parking space for three large production trucks adjacent / near the stadium.

I did a bit of due diligence and found out the following: The minimum bid to host a non-seeded playoff game is 30k. Sounds like most bids are in the mid to upper 5 figures. However, there have been several schools that have bid into the low six figures to secure the home game.
Opening playoff weekend is obviously a tougher week for attendance and ticket sales even for most premier FCS programs with it being Thanksgiving week and students not on campus.

There was a column, probably linked to a Crossports post by a writer/blogger who covers this stuff, and it said last year because of Covid, the specs were very important but this year the home field will be decided mainly by the size of the bid. In other words, cash on the barrel head. I suspect unless the two bids are close in dollar amount, the larger one secures home field advantage. Then the NCAA will work around variables like starting time in a case of no lights. BTW, why wouldn't ESPN+ love a noon start? A longer window to sell ads instead of only having Bocce and Badminton to show at noon.

You'd have to go back to the 1988 season (season-opener) to find the last time we played URI. Pretty strange that there haven't been more games, given that they're no more than a 75-minute drive.

You're making it sound like these games will get a rating. ESPN+ really isn't a profitable business for Disney. Whether the NCAA is getting money from ESPN or not doesn't matter, they foot all travel costs for postseason tournaments.

Probably boils down to math. In an 11 game season, URI is tied to 8 CAA games, Brown + an FBS money game. One opening left. They just finished a 4-game series with Harvard. At some point during the early to mid 2000s I seem to recall the A10/CAA was playing a nine-game conference schedule for a few years, which would've further reduced opportunities for a matchup.

It got a bit overshadowed because he was stripped from behind and fumbled at the end of the play, but everyone should rewatch Sluka’s signature jump cut juke in the 2nd half of the Lafayette game. I saw one view from the end zone the next day and I can count on one hand how many times I’ve seen a QB (at any level) break a Defensive Back’s ankles so badly. One of those you have to rewatch in regular speed then in slow motion…

JMU and ‘Nova To throw out another possibility, Nova could lose to a decent (5-5) Delaware at Delaware (it is actually a rivalry game). Of course Nova is still in but they lose their seed, which means....
