Per Sagarin, HC had the #230 schedule while SHU's was #250 Among FCS schools, Massey has HC's strength of schedule as #97 and Sacred Heart as #117. Massey has HC ranked at #31 and Ranks SHU at #84.

Massey's combined ranks have only two conferences as ranked below the Patriot League. The one right below the PL is the Pioneer league. SHU's Pioneer league is not "better." I think we'll see that on Saturday. Pioneer League is out west. SHU won the NEC.

Oops! Thanks. I confused their nickname (Pioneers) with their conference (NEC). My bad. Northeast is right ahead of the PL...and not by much.

Davidson won the Pioneer, also has Marist Marist is a geographical fit in the NEC. Does it have to do with scholarships? I seem to remember the Pioneer League was/is non-scholarship.

Anyone know of SHU has a message board and if there was chatter about an HC match-up? In recognition of the famous Red Sox message board, Sons of Bobby Valentine?

One of the ESPN-U commentators had Villanova as his upset alert team, the other had Villanova getting to the semi's. Predicted weather for Saturday is sunny and chilly. Won't need lights. Yes, if HC was renting lights they wouldn't need to schedule at noon. On the average, it is warmer at noon than any other time. So, no complaints from me.

Perhaps the last place teams (Bucknell and Wagner) of the respective conferences could play on the undercard. 🙂

Not to get too far ahead of things, but just to update / correct an item above: Thanks for posting this breezy I wonder if this will keep some HC fans from venturing down on a Friday. Perhaps this lends itself to an ESPN/2 game rather than streaming on Plus. I, for one, was thinking of heading down to Philly if we beat Sacred Heart but I have a hockey game to coach that Friday afternoon in Needham, Mass. The missus gets out of work at 4, I don't think we could make it.

Not to get ahead of ourselves, and not sure if anyone else has mentioned this, but the winner of the Villanova game may very well be facing off against old friend Sacramento State.
Now that would be a human interest story for FCS fans.

If I recall correctly the captains came to a game at the Auditorium wearing and each wearing our Holy Cross Jersey

If Holy Cross is successful through the next two games, and the opponent is Sacramento State, Tom Lamb and Bill Mocevicz ( Holy Cross) and Mike Carter ( Sacramento State ) should be Honorary Captains for the game and be present for the coin toss if possible.
It will certainly provide an interesting story for pre game coverage. Our SID should pitch the story to Burke Magnus at ESPN.

Hearing HC will indeed be bringing in portable lights for the game. "Winning" the bid is turning into quite the loss leader. PP mentioned $60,000 for temporary lights several years ago. Since they aren't needed for a noon start, would boosting FB staff salaries be a better use of that money?

Renting and installing temporary lights for a noon game on a day forecast to be sunny doesn't strike me as a good investment, but I am cheap and perhaps out of touch, too.

Maybe lights are one of the few things you actually need to host a game besides cash If so, we would have had to include that in our bid if we wanted it to be successful.

The definitive story of the Sac State/Holy Cross connection was captured in the fall 2004 issue of the Holy Cross Magazine that used to be available on line but has since been taken off for some reason. It was the 35th anniversary of the cancelled season and the article was entitled "The Missing Season." There were interviews of almost all the '69 seniors and a couple of underclassmen and their reactions 35 years later including Lamb and Moncevicz trip to Sacramento State.
Subsequently, as I posted at the time, I and a football classmate/co-worker of mine who was one of the victims of the hepatitis outbreak happened to be on a business trip together to Sacramento. A local Sacramento business associate and graduate of Sac State was well connected with the people there (my classmate and I were Rhode Islanders and so, "we knew a guy"). After our business meeting, the local took us to Sac State for a tour of the stadium and we met the AD and one of the assistant football coaches. They were both aware of the history and connection with Holy Cross though neither had been there at the time (1969). I knew Dick Regan and while I emphasized to the Sac State people that we were not there in any official capacity and were not speaking for or on behalf of Holy Cross, I wondered if they had any interest in playing a game against Holy Cross (we had made a couple of trips to play on the west coast previously). They were very enthusiastic about the idea and really would have liked to make a trip to the east coast but said money was the issue. Essentially, they were looking for a pay game.
When I got back, I talked to Dick Regan who said that was a non-starter. 1. we weren't about to pay for another team to come to our place regardless of the history and 2. we weren't going to go west as he said Tom Gilmore didn't want to make any more west coast trips as he felt it took too much out of the players. From memory now, think we went twice to the west coast either back to back years or with a year between and lost both games.
On the 50th anniversary, I was trying to get TPTB to honor the players of the '69 team at a halftime ceremony at one of the games but without success. I guess I no longer knew a guy!
