I suppose this could be done "bracket wise" but I'll stick to just straight out pick every game W/L. Again, no spreads. Let's see who's been following FCS football nationally this year. All games Saturday with our game kicking things off at noon.

Sacred Heart at Holy Cross is the weakest first-round matchup. Both teams have solid individual talent but are not expected to do damage in the bracket due to lack of depth. Holy Cross will be favored to beat Sacred Heart in the first round This source puts SHU as the 23rd most likely team to win the championship in the 24-member field …and puts us at 20.

If we beat Sacred Heart it will still be considered an NCAA playoff win just like the Southern win in basketball under Carmody.
And I think our chances against Villanova are better than 2009 when we played them close. A lot will depend on our front line players staying healthy as the comment above is valid about lack of depth but only relative to the playoff competition.

Villanova is very good this year. 10-1, beat JMU and played Penn State pretty competitively. Only loss was a surprise home thrashing by William & Mary and their swift, ball-hawking defense. This may have been their "Merrimack game". I've been saying that I see Villanova as a potential contender to get to Frisco. Of course the 2009 Villanova team we competed admirably against actually WON the national championship. |

And the two (very) memorable close games they won were the 1-pointer in the semifinals and the 2-pointer in the finals v 1-seed Montana. Last four or so years they’ve been very talented but hit by a truly bizarre string of injuries…this year they’ve avoided that level of injury. As far as the SHU matchup is concerned, I will never ever again curse the non-seeding/regional quirkiness that is the FCS first round. Ain’t it grand! |
