GI believe the Crusader’s final drive of the Sacred Heart game may have been the greatest single drive ever at Fitton Field. The Hail Mary pass from Matt Sluka to Jalen Coker rivals the Miracle in Miami (Flutie to Phelan and I think Coker made a better catch as Phelan was behind the defense and Coker had two defenders right on him). Plus it was preceded by several other incredible plays by the offense, led by Sluka. On this final drive, Sluka converted a fourth down with a 5-yard gain, and later, on third-and-17 from the HC 24, took off for 21 yards. He completed passes to Coker (nine yards) and senior Tenio Ayeni (10) to set up the winning strike. This should go down in HC folklore as “The Drive”. Consider: - What was at stake: The first ever post season victory and the opportunity to advance to Villanova
- What had transpired to this point: a fantastic defensive effort by Sacred Heart (and penalties and miscues by the HC offense) had kept the Crusaders out of the end-zone (this was no shoot out)
- The Drama: There was 3:14 left on the clock so it was do or die.
I was sitting next to Matt Sluka’s mom and dad at the game and after this play I told Mr. Sluka that I thought his son just completed the greatest drive ever at Fitton Field, pointed at the Ring of Honor names on the banners across the field and said that if he keeps this up his name will be up there as well. I hope it will! Great Win. Go Cross.

I agree! One thing Sluka does is win.
Clear helmet to helmet hit on that final drive didn't phase him at all. He's a fighter.
I won't take any Any Given Saturday Sluka slander from any of these clown NDSU fans. Sorry we don't play games in a dome!

So the drive started at 3:14, right?
With apologies for abridging a biblical verse to fit the scenario, I note that Philippians chapter 3, verse 14 begins:
“I pursue, looking towards the goal, for the prize.....”
Just sayin’.

I love the idea of immortalizing "The Drive" in our memories.
The Alabama Crimson Tide, perhaps the most storied program in NCAA history, have a number of key plays (I know a drive is more than 1 play) that all fans refer to in similar fashion. There are even paintings to match of many of these key plays from Alabama history: "the goal line stand", "maximum block", "the kick", "the catch", etc. Maybe five or ten years from now when anyone on this forum says simply "the drive" , all other posters will know what it references.

Some go-gettah in the HC athletic office should put together a video of that drive....agreed, given the stakes, I can't think of another game ending drive at Fitton more important, in my era 1970-today anyway

Most amazing part of that video? How young and slim Tom Gilmore was!

Not just Tom Gilmore. We were all younger and slimmer back in the day. 😂
I remember the game and the play well. We were sitting next to Dom Randolph’s Father and Grandfather. Upon the TD reception, we all jumped up and down for at least 5 seconds. When I saw Dom’s dad at the next game, he said his back had not been the same since before the play, with all the jumping and people giving him a hugs after the play.
Seems like the #9 is a very good number for a HC QB.

I noticed that as well. You were lucky to have been there to see it.

I’m not comparing this win and final drive as high as many of you are - because: We had not played a good game offensively up to that point and We beat an NEC champ that was a 15 pt underdog
My sense of relief is up there as high as any other win in a very long time

Playoffs survive and advance!

And the defense had been great most of the game. Point spreads are meaningless.for any expectations, especially for unseeded FCS teams.

I thought it was a three point spread, the same as the margin of victory. After watching Merrimack and SHU perform on Fitton Field this season I think the NEC is the equal of the PL in Football and doubt any other PL team could stand up to SHU.

I don’t know about the rest of the NEC but SHU definitely would have won the PL this year if it switched places with HC (just as HC would have won the NEC).

“You got Mossed!” coming up on ESPN. Hoping to see Coker on there.
Update: Coker was not on there. Randy Moss is dead to me.

Also Sluka’s falling to the ground completion did not make top plays! He should have at least got a helmet sticker. Oh wait ESPN college football doesn’t know the FCS exists.
