In a "heard it from a friend, who heard it from a friend" fashion, Chesney may have been in Delaware this weekend looking at homes. Don't shoot the piano playahhh, just posting what I was texted. From the UD board: Heard that Chesney was interviewed over the weekend off campus. So the process may still be going on or they just want to do a CYA and interview a couple more candidates before announcing.www.gohens.net/boards/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=27953&p=398412&hilit=chesney#p398412

Well, since he successfully rebuilt a PL program to the point we almost beat the CAA champ in round 2, I could see why Delaware would at least eyeball him. Delaware knows the Nova team and its quality very well and our performance was quite impressive.
Given the school, position, level, and salary I could see why BC would eyeball them. (His next stop is sure to be a head coach somewhere.)
I don’t think BC’s stock will be any higher next year - and assume BC knows that.

In a tangent, Delaware's message board seems archaic compared to ours and the yellow color scheme hurts the eyes.

It was all a formality in that Carty was the guy with the announcement likely this week prior to Friday night. if Chesney gets the job, it either means Carty passed (highly unlikely but you never know) or that Chesney blew them away in discussions over the weekend that he passed Carty in the 24th hour…the latter would not surprise me given Coach Ches’ ability to articulate a vision and strategy with passion.

Carry is a Delaware alum and spent 11 years in the UNH staff. Seems like a logical (and solid) choice.

I met Ryan Carty after the last UNH game, on September 7, 2019, at Fitton, in the parking garage.
Seemed very personable despite the UNH lost, to HC, and was complementary of the HC football team.
For those who like conspiracy theories, it was not a Bob Woodward type meeting in a garage, as there were others in the elevator.
Depending upon the dominoes..... You speculate the possible scenarios.....

Some of us, myself, included were cautious about hiring a head coach with only D2 and D3 head coaching experience. I am happy to say I was proven completely wrong. I would be very disappointed in Coach Chesney and Holy Cross athletics in general (the last one isn't too hard to do) if he left the program at this point. Carty is a UD alum, hire him Blue Hens!

UD is a fine program and they will pay him more than his current package by far. That said he told his players and the media the team has arrived and can compete. If you can compete with the CAA is that move merely a lateral move with more pay. If he is leaving I would think it would be for something at the next level. I wonder if UD received permission to talk from the HC administration to talk to Chesney or if the Coach asked? His stock could grow by improving the record and/or going deeper into the playoffs-- it just depends what prize he is going for in the end Also if he did interview and accepts without giving HC a chance to respond following the season that would be an interesting decision. For him to be interviewed over the weekend I was wondering if they put it together following the game or was it in the works prior to the game? Given it isn't a major upward move, I would think most of his assistance coaches join him if asked. If true and he doesn't get the job this likely will hurt him with the current roster, recruits and others he is recruiting for a Dec 15 signing. THey understand it is a business but they also look up to and trust him. But it will be what it will be...

I have no idea if Chesney is looking to leave of not. My feeling is he's not long for College Hill. Maybe one more year at best.
But to say that you'd be disappointed in someone who looks to further his or her career is ridiculous.
Delaware is a high-level FCS job that has more visibility and more than likely pays a heck of a lot more.

/\ EFG: IMHO BC’s stock is more likely to stay the same/move down than go up next year. (Note: A 4th PL title doesn’t move the needle, a win or two in the FCS championship doesn’t move the needle) I do think BC knows that.
I think CAA and Delaware in particular is considered substantially higher level football than PL (not being sarcastic).
Should be hearing from Delaware very soon (I’d imagine) as to their hire.

Delaware is a high-level FCS job that has more visibility and more than likely pays a heck of a lot more. We have the capability to pay the same or higher than Delaware. We just made it further than Delaware has this year. Last year they likewise snuck by SHU in the playoffs. Delaware posters seem to think their BOT won't pony up the money they think the head coach deserves. What does switching to UD do? Maybe you get a chance to go a little deeper? Does he genuinely believe with just slightly more resources he can win a title at Delaware and then get an FBS job? Part of me is sour about finally having a good thing and the prospect of losing that and taking another step backwards. We should be trying to keep our super seniors, bring in high-quality recruits, and fill out the roster with transfers right now. We could be looking to assemble a whole new staff. A coach should at least try and make a 5 year commitment to see his recruits through to graduation, but I suppose that's not longer relevant. Here's to losing BC, going back to 7-4 records and hoping we win the league to make the playoffs only to lose in the 1st round. I'm tired of the old routine. I want bigger and better for HC football. If I had a billion dollars I'd pay the school to leave the PL for the CAA or found a new league with northeast powers. PL is a dead end.

I said it would be an interesting decision-- meaning to me he made up his mind earlier that if he received another offer, he was leaving and had nothing to do if HC was going to pay him more or pay him what his market value might be.
UD is at a higher level, but not sure how much anymore, and I would think he would want something at a level above the CAA for his next move

I agree with you hcpride on one hand and disagree on another. I think Delaware because of it's history, pay structure, attendance is WAY different than other FCS programs. Delaware football from 1940 to 2016 didn't have back to back losing season. 76 years without back to back losing seasons. Pretty impressive.
Regarding his stock I disagree - I think it could go up next year. There is talk as many as 14-15 Seniors might come back. They will be loaded again - possibly to even win a second round game - although not sure they are going to get as favorable a draw as they did this year.
Personally - I'm not for loading up in one year at all. Reason is because it's short sighted. Simply foregoing this class entirely because we all know they won't back fill it through the transfer portal is not the right way to go long term - and when I say long term - I mean in about 3 years time.
Having a gaping hole in 1 class - I'm not a fan of that at all - but maybe that's just me.

There is information out there that the UD job pays in the neighborhood of 400-425k per year. I highly doubt HC will pay that.
It's my understanding Carty is #1, Chesney #2 and that if it were to be Bob you'd see an announcement on it over the next couple of days. It could very well be that Carty accepted it, but KC Keeler - the Sam Houston Coach asked them/Carty to not announce it due to distractions. It's also possible he's been in contact with the coaches that are currently there on how to proceed over the next 9 days to sign a class. Because that component is a significant part of the process as well.
Good chance that Sam Houston makes it to the finals again so they could be playing until late Dec/early Jan.

If he leaves, how many of those seniors come back? The rest of the roster? A tough recruiting year as it is because of the roster uncertainty, and if he doesn't get and take the UD job, we know the other coaches will tell the recruits he is looking to leave. It might not work for them, however, as in this day and age, players and coaches are all ready to jump.

Great question on Seniors - regarding the rest of the roster - who knows. It certainly helps to have tape in order to get money from another school. If you don't have tape it might be difficult to get an offer from another school if you enter the portal.

Is that the reason those Patriot League Stadium game streams were so bad when they started streaming? No game tape haha

If BC was to leave (and I would never question someone’s right to maximize their value in the open market) perhaps this might open up an opportunity for Scott James to take over as head coach. It would surely help the transition process and would be a great opportunity for Scott. Personally, I think he is a terrific coach who should get a lot of credit for where our program is today.

bangordailynews.com/2021/12/02/sports/umaine-sports/umaine-will-significantly-increase-salary-for-new-head-football-coach-joam40zk0w/A little insight into Head Coach compensation in the CAA. As per 2020 records, Maine was the lowest at 153k (article indicates a big raise coming for new Maine HC, Rhode Island second lowest at 263k, CAA average at 400k and highest paid being Delaware at 588k. I've read the FBS C-USA is looking to add 1-2 more CAA teams by 2024/2025 and if true Delaware seems most logical to follow James Madison. (NDSU, SHSU and Jack State already going in 2023). Let's be serious, the UD job will be end up being the top FCS job on the market in 2021 and whoever fills it is taking a big step forward in their career.

Correction: Liberty (not NDSU) is the 4th program going to C-USA in 2023 along with Sam Houston State, Jacksonville State and New Mexico State. The C-USA lost a total of 6 teams to the AAC so that's why some pundits say they are still looking to add a couple more. North Dakota State has not been accepted to a FBS conference to my knowledge. James Madison is moving to the Sun Belt in 2023 along with Marshall, Old Dominion and Southern Miss (also all C-USA schools) So to some up C-USA started the 2021 football season with 14 programs and as it stands today will have 9 in 2023.
