Gil Hodges was elected to the Hall of Fame by the Golden Days Era Committee. The long arc of history bends to justice. His selection was long overdue.

Gil Hodges was elected to the Hall of Fame by the Golden Days Era Committee. The long arc of history bends to justice. His selection was long overdue. Gil, Jim Kaat, Minnie Minoso, Tony Olivia, Buck O'Neil all are names immediately recognizable to me. I had baseball cards of all of them except Buck and Bud Fowler the other person elected. Congratulations to all and their families.

We've had some great discussions on these pages about Gil Hodges and other stars not yet in the hall. I know hchoops, Brooklyn Dodgers fan, has to be very happy about this honor for Gil. Others-- Jim Kaat --always a fan of his, especially at his career's end when i lived in St Louis and he was on the 1982 WS chanmps. Played in 4 decades 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, Great fielder Minnie Minoso--what a talent--would love to have seen him play. He was a fixture at the Cubby Bear Lounge across from Wrigley Field well into his80's. He did Kaat one better bny playing on 5 decades, but the 70's and 80's appearances were gimmicks Tony Oliva- great hitter--his real name is Pedro- he borrowed his brother Tony's passport to get out of Cuba to play ball in the US and thus became Tony thereafter. It baffled me that teammate Zoilo Versalles was the 1965 AL MVP instead of Tony Bud Fowler- I know nothing about him-will have to read up Buck O'Neil--wasn't he the star of the great Ken Burns baseball documentary? No Dick Allen, still? ?

Travesty that Dick Allen fell one vote short again on the first veterans committee vote after his death. Hopefully next year.

You are correct, KY, I am very pleased that Gil finally got his due. I am most happy that his wife, Joan, 95, and a long time Brooklynite, is alive to see it. I hope that she can make the induction ceremony. Many of Gil’s players from the ‘69 champions have been quoted as also being overjoyed. Vin Scully’s public letter in the last few weeks in support may have helped.
