Dec 7 - a time to pause and reflect. May the souls of all who were there and sacrificed so much - then and in later years - rest in peace and may their descendants find comfort.

Doing some quick math. . . someone who was in the military should have been at least 18 years old. That would make them 98 today. Not just impressive there are still 30 survivors, but that they are well enough to travel to Hawaii. Heroes 80 years ago and still impressive today.
My mom's cousin served on the Arizona and died in the attack

There's some doubt Admiral Yamamoto actually said this, but he sure should have if he didn't.
"I fear we have awoken a sleeping giant and filled him with a terrible resolve"

There's some doubt Admiral Yamamoto actually said this, but he sure should have if he didn't. "I fear we have awoken a sleeping giant and filled him with a terrible resolve" As I recall Yamamoto was a naval attache in Wash DC and traveled a lot through the US and saw all the factories along the rail lines as he traveled by train. He came to believe that the USA's tremendous manufacturing power would make a huge difference if war came.

He believed starting the attack before the official declaration of war was delivered had caused Japan to enter a war they would surely lose. He had a more accurate view of the US industrial capacity than many of his fellow officers who grossly underestimated the willingness of Americans to fight.

"I fear we have awoken a sleeping giant and filled him with a terrible resolve" not sure of this but believe, in prewar planning, Yamamoto advised Tojo that that US Navy's carriers & battleships would need to be neutralized to allow Japan's military objectives in the Pacific... but that would only last for 6 months. 7 months after Peril Harbor, at Midway, the striking power of the Japanese Navy was neutralized by ships & planes built in the '20s & 30's with crews and pilots that had been trained in the 30's
