Holy Cross Temporarily Suspends Spectators
From Athletic Events
WORCESTER, Mass. — In response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the effects of the Omicron variant, and in the interest of health and safety of the campus community, Holy Cross Athletics will temporarily suspend spectator attendance at all athletic events until further notice, beginning on Friday, January 7 with the men’s basketball game vs. Lafayette.
The following changes will be effective immediately until further notice:
Events will continue to be held as scheduled and in compliance with all conference and institutional COVID-19 policies.
Events will not be open to the general public.
Tickets purchased for events that do not allow for spectator attendance during this period will be refunded through the original method of payment. Any questions regarding ticketing can be directed to the Holy Cross Ticket Office at tickets@holycross.edu or 1-844-GOCROSS.
All men’s and women’s basketball contests will be broadcasted on ESPN+. Men’s ice hockey games will be streamed on FloHockey, and women’s ice hockey games are available on College Sports Live.
Statement from Nick Smith and Rose Shea, co-interim Directors of Athletics:
Our top priority is the health and safety of our student-athletes, coaches, staff, fans and greater Holy Cross and Worcester communities, and we are thoroughly committed to maintaining as many competitive opportunities as possible for our teams. We are working closely with College and medical officials and will continue to evaluate our options as the winter season progresses.

Too bad, but not at all surprising. Or inappropriate, really.
That said, I'm 100% sure I could have socially distanced from the other couple of dozen people in Hart tomorrow night.

I was actually working up the energy to make the trek tomorrow night on the theory that spectators would be banned shortly.

You knew this nonsense was coming again. What a joke. I am done buying season tickets . On top of that every game they sell 2 dollar tickets.
I hope they lose!
Go Lafayette
Good stay home for ever. I thought we got the shots so we could do things.

Talk about a fluid situation. This is two policy changes in less than 48 hours

For now. Who knows later tonight or tomorrow or the next day? If nothing else, Covid has made us all be flexible and adaptable to sudden change.

Those who feel they are at risk aren't going to games in the first place, at least according to those who have posted that they have issues. So why are they doing this?

Princeton will allow students, faculty and staff who have been fully vaccinated, but the general public is banned. Kind of ironic as I just got my booster jab in the Jadwin Gym lobby yesterday. This policy will be in effect until 1/31.

Maybe the local hospital ask them.Just for your info most hospitals are packed & filled with those who are unvaccinated. No room left for those with other problems. Sad

None of whom could go to the Hart Center in the first place. Only vaccinated people. With masks. Details, details.

Because these indoor gathering spots are incubators for Omicron and if the spread leaks on campus it could cost the college millions in lost room and board revenue if they have to send students home again? Probably as much self interest as good citizenship even though the nation's chief public health official is an alumnus.

Sad highly doubtful. and to be blunt since so many threads have been hijacked by this kind of stuff, nobody comes to read covid "info" like this on crossports as we have all heard this ad nauseum elsewhere. many posters have asked that we not get into covid debates - for which the data are nowhere near as simplistic as you or others on either side of the polarized camps are making them out to be - and to leave it out of the basketball threads. this is a good idea for many reasons.

But, sadly, the discussion of Omicron spreading or not spreading throughout the Hart Center; causing the remaining fan base to watch on TV; is a welcome diversion to the hideous basketball on display a couple times a week.

With the weather, not a lot of people would be going to the game tonight even without Covid and with a winning team.

This is a prudent move by HC. COVID continues to kill people every day, not just unvaccinated people. My next door neighbor is an ER Dr. at Hartford Hospital and he says they are bursting at the seams, a lot of unvaccinated but some vaccinated as well. A 26 year old died of COVID in the ER yesterday. I don't get the anger about this.

FWIW, I was at a D-I college game yesterday that not only allowed fans but did not have a vaccine requirement. On the other hand, no big crowds like we get at Hart either

While I attended games in FL & CT, I was looking forward to my first home game. Despite the very low expectations here, I see slight improvement and foresee their first D-1 win tonight. . . Hopefully!

COVID is becoming like Jesus, somehow gaining the same spontaneous powers of Matthew 18:20: "For where two or three are gathered together in my name, I am there in the midst of them.”

Vince said they will revisit this policy in coming weeks. See his letter in the HC COVID thread in the in the non-sports subforum.
