Many freshmen, especially big, thin players, just are not ready for college hoops. I presume that Lewis is one of those many players. There are many far more troubling issues that Lewis’ playing time. This makes sense.

If the team was playing well, which they are NOT, Lewis’ playing time would not be an issue. The team is playing very poorly and Lewis appeared to some of us who saw the open practice to have a better than average shot - much better than we’ve seen from the players that Nelson puts in the game.
Now, granted, it was a small sampling of Lewis’ abilities yet if this team isn’t desperate for a decent (good?) outside shooter, then maybe Nelson really is a good coach.
And normally, I’d be the first to say “coach knows best,” but he’s lost that presumption of expertise based on what we’ve seen and the results his team has accomplished over the past 2+/- seasons.

Overall, we take a ton of tough shots. Whether it's an ill-advised 3 or mid-range 2, the players nor Nelson's offense make it easy on themselves to manufacture scoring. Certainly on more than one occasion, I've noticed our inability to run pick & roll "cleanly". A poor decision leading to a turnover, bad timing between the handler & screener, or our bigs with cinder-blocks for hands & not expecting a pass -- it's been tough to watch. This team is crying out for last year's RJJ....I'm afraid we won't see it (fingers crossed though!). Granted they are young players and there is time to develop, I'm not sure I see too many all-conference talents blossoming before our eyes.

Same old story - incredibly long stretches of poor basketball. Yes, there are going to be runs, but you can't have complete dry spells lasting almost 10 minutes in lots of games.
No consistency. Someone looks good and you think maybe that player has turned a corner - next game brings a step right back

Louth should be in until he is exhausted or fouls out One of the only players who is getting better or adjusting Absolutely agree on Louth - I have no idea why he isn't getting more minutes. Ditto Townsel
Without RJJ (not dressed last night) we have no PG, so I guess Luc fills the square by default. Would like to see him, Louth, Malcolm, and GG on the court together as much as possible the rest of the way, with Bo/Bubba sharing the bulk of minutes at the remaining spot. Believe that gives us the best balance of speed, size, shooting ability, inside/outside play, and defense.
Martindale off the bench for offense, Dorsey for defense, Rabinovich a few minutes to give Louth a breather, everybody else take a number.

You have named 9 players. The only one who has played regularly left to “take a number” is Kenney.

Point taken. Re-thinking in terms of percentages . . . The top six get 80% of the minutes, Martindale 10%, Dorsey and Rabs 5% each. Trim the last three to give Kenney and Lewis some time.

Single digits for rebounds and points in four games combined since then. Obviously minutes are a factor where Coach Nelson went with the hot hand and Kenney has marginally more minutes in those last four games combined than he had at Harvard

That is one of our biggest issues IMO. Luc is a 2G in a PG's body.
It is so unfair to have him run the point. He is a fine basketball player with some exceptional athleticism but he clearly does not posses a PG's mentality.
I would love to see Nelson try Dorsey at the point and see if his passing skills can find us some open looks. It may not work. But I certainly think it is worth a try.

Mid-range 2s, or even long-range 2s, are the least-efficient shots on the court. They should be reserved for the best-of-the-best shooters on our team. I'm not sure we have anyone who qualifies. Everything else should be a shot at the hoop -- high percentage or get fouled -- or a 3 pointer for the extra point.
If you can't shoot the basketball, you should not be playing D1 hoops. I can go to the hood down the street and find ten 17 year-olds that could light it up better.

Lehigh stinks. We are such an embarrassment. We are the worst team in one of the worst basketball league leagues in America according to Sagarin’s ratings. The record of the bottom 5 teams in the conference is 14 and 55 vs D1 comp. Other than the people on this board and family and friends, almost no one cares about our men’s basketball program.

I remember how Austin Butler played through several injuries. That may be something like what RJJ is going through. He was clearly not the same person we saw on the court in his senior year...after more than one corrective surgery. Perhaps RJJ may still be that strong leader the team needs once he is able to put his injuries behind him and can again be the player we saw in his frosh season.

Here's what Sports-Reference has for each player's O-Rating and D-Rating. I rounded each rating to a whole number to reduce eye strain
Player=O-Rating/D-Rating= Difference (the higher the better)
Humphrey= 119/109=+10 Townsell=119/110=+9 Gates=103/105= (2) Martindale=98/105=(7) Montgomery=99/106=(7) Kenney=96/104=(8) Coulibaly=96/105=(9) Luc=90/106=(16) Johnson=77/106=(29) Rabinovich=71/103=(32) Dorsey=63/110=(47)
Lewis=116/98=+18 but note 26 of 41 minutes were against D-3
These ratings are based on somebody's formula and that formula may have assumptions and weightings that we'd dispute, Still, the Townsell number and his FG percentage cited earlier on this thread (now 21/31=.677 on twos and 3/6=.500 on threes) keep me wondering why he doesn't get more playing time. He did play 26 minutes in last night's loss but only 9 in the win over Laf which, in a tiny sample, does not support my suggestion that he merits more time. On a team that is woeful on two point shooting, what is he doing differently from his teammates that has enabled him to connect at such a high percentage?

He takes significantly fewer shots per minute than most of his teammates. 6 attempted 3s is hardly a reliable sample

Played lots of basketball with guys from the Bronx, White Plains, New Rochelle, Mount Vernon, and all over Westchester. They may not have had the grades to go to HC, but they can flat out ball.
Our team 3 point percentage is 34% for the season, which is not good. I'm encouraging players to take a 3 pointer over a long 2 with all other factors being equal. If I have to be specific, I wouldn't encourage Holy Cross to shoot the ball at all if they're going to do it that poorly; drive to the rack, get fouled, try to make close baskets. If I have to be positive rather than negative in my critical thinking, let's actively recruit basketball players who can shoot the basketball well (the PRIMARY SKILL OF THE GAME imho).
Okay with feeding Gates, particularly with the offensive adeptness he's displayed over the last two games alone, every time down the floor as you say.

He takes significantly fewer shots per minute than most of his teammates. 6 attempted 3s is hardly a reliable sample I'd suggest that MT taking fewer shots per 40 is part of the problem. It's time to see what he does with more minutes and more opportunities.
He's made almost 70% of his thirty-two twos, 200 "basis points" better than anybody else on one of the worst two-point shooting teams (43%) in the country. He also has an outstanding 53% FTR, better by far than almost any of his mates. And he plays competently at the defensive end.
Agreed he gets an incomplete on his long-range shooting. But other than Gates, he's the smartest, most efficient shooter we have inside, and we can hardly be worse trying to feature him more.

Malcolm averages fewer than 17mpg, but playing the 4 predominantly, his 1.3 rpg is low. Last night, 2 in 26 minutes. Hard to judge his defense.Ideally he should be playing the 3, at least on D. He drove the ball effectively last night, especially to his left hand. Do not know if that is sustainable. He does not seem like a high volume scorer or taker.

Townsel at the 3 sounds good to me (Louth -5, Gates -4). I'd be interested to see what would happen if he and JM flipped their mpg.
Again, the larger point . . . how could it hurt to shake things up? It's not like Nelson would be tinkering with some well-oiled machine. We suck a lot, and maybe this is one way to suck less.

Right now, based on how the players are deployed, I don't get the sense they complement one another. Perhaps that is on the coach, perhaps this is down to where our players are at in their development, perhaps both...

One last check on Malcolm. In his two years in JUCO (caveat: different team, different division, different opponents, etc) he went 24/75 on threes= .320 . On twos he went 190/350= .543. On the free throw line he hit 132/181= .729.

MT seems to do a nice job finishing at the rim, through contact sometimes; really extends to get the ball high on the glass, with nice touch. His first step seems above average to this humble observer as well. Can't see any reason why he would be getting yanked around minutes wise - he hustles, hits the floor for loose balls, etc. I want him and Bubba out there a LOT.
Don't understand the use of Louth, either.
If JM was performing offensively at the level he's shown he's capable of, I'd say reduce KL's minutes some, and let ND run the show more. But, with ND and JM struggling so badly to score, it's hard to play them together right now. As I've said before, though, I do like the rest of ND's game - he sees the floor,is pretty fluid and quick, and really works on D.
I never feel comfortable piling on the coach, but if we just had some way of getting some info/updates from time to time we wouldn't have to speculate so much. I still cannot wrap my head around a D1 program with no radio broadcasts.
