You know, I bet Nelson is a very frustrated person. Not just because of all the losses but because he can't figure out why his players aren't as good as he was as a player. They can't do what he did. That's something that almost none of our past coaches had to think about. Carmody? Nope. Brown? Probably not. Kearney? Nope. Ralph? Nope (the "Boys of '67" might disagree but my opinion was he was a very average player). Raynor? Don't think so. Not to you get to Blaney did we have a coach who was probably better as a player than his own players (Ron Jr. an exception). If the measuring stick is time spent in the NBA, Blankey was a better player than Nelson, and George had his cup of coffee in the NBA when there were less teams and thus rosters were not as diluted.

You and Crucis really need to somehow disable your spellcheck! You can't keep blaming it on Stieve Joobs.

It’s his minions that are causing the mischief. 🤣

Started 3 years at Dartmouth and was recruited by better programs than the Green.

Cutting down on turnovers is nice but not helpful if you can't score. I saw Blaney play a lot and he wasn't that good (Potter, Vicens, Doran, etc.) I agree that he is frustrated, however. Nelson, that is. Wasn't going to watch tonight after the Lehigh debacle but changed my mind. Hope springs eternal. How the hell old are you to have seen George play? I think you're thinking of his brother.

A little digression here-
My wife's uncle played against George Blaney in high school. Her uncle played at St Cecelia high school in Englewood NJ. He says it wasn't pretty for St. Cecelia's. St Cecelia's is now closed - closed in the 80's.
A quick trivia question since there was no game last night.
Vince Lombardi was the HS coach for the St. Cecelia's football team in the 40's. They went 13-0 in 1943 and received some recognition as the National Champs.
The question - who was the QB of that 1943 team?
I should mention that there is no connection to HC
No cheating.
I need to correct the question - didn't phrase it correctly
Who was the QB of the team St. Cecelia's beat to go 13-0?

I don't know their QB, but I do remember they played their home games in their cafeteria...tile floors and all. Players sometimes ran in to the wall (only 3 feet back from the court at either end). Fabs sat in folding chairs along one side of the court and the teams on the other. A good crowd was 100. They could have adapted pretty well to the current health issues.

George was a very good college player. As most quality guards of that era, he could dribble , pass, shoot and defend. Of the 3 fine players whom you claim were better, only Potter qualifies..

That's where the legend of players running through a wall for Coach Lombardi began. The chairs sound well suited for throwing at the refs.🙂

So no one has chimed in and since I have been on calls all day since I posed the question.
The QB who played against St. Cecilia's in that 1943 season was Brooklyn Prep's Joe Paterno

I thought I was old (70). Yup, you are old. It’s just that many of us here are older.

You could probably fill up a small phone directory (if any still exist) with the names of men and some women who played pickup games with Togo!
Getting back to the trivia question, when I read the question, it was unclear that it was the opponent and not Vince's team. I wouldn't have known it was Paterno w/o reading the article (even though the article was incorrect about which position he played, I knew he was a qb at Brown).
The answer to the second question, what famous basketball person played high school ball at St.Cecelia's, is Bill Raftery.
