Carolina's defense ramped up in the second half holding Newberry to a 42.1 field goal percentage. The Gamecocks forced 21 turnovers in the game and out-rebounded the Wolves 52-33. Newberry, who looked to run all game with a smaller lineup, would finish the game with 39 attempts from three-point range. With the win, South Carolina remains unbeaten in five career exhibition contests under the direction of Head Coach Frank Martin.

SC opens against Louisiana Tech tonight. Here is the preview for that game from the SC website:
COLUMBIA, S.C. -- South Carolina hosts Louisiana Tech on Friday in the season opener for both schools at Colonial Life Arena. The meeting is the second all-time between the two programs and the first since the 1960-61 campaign. Friday’s matchup will be broadcast on SEC Network + with Burch Antley (pxp) and former Gamecock Carey Rich (analyst) on the call. The matchup vs. the Bulldogs marks the first in a stretch of three games in five days for Carolina to open up the 2016-17 season.
GAME STORYLINES - South Carolina is in its 109th season of varsity basketball in 2016-17. - On the sidelines, Frank Martin is joined by associate head coach Matt Figger, assistant coaches Perry Clark and Bruce Shingler, and director of operations Andy Assaley. - The contest vs. Louisiana Tech marks Carolina’s first official matchup on its new court, which features a Block C logo at center court, a lighter wood grain and South Carolina Palmetto Trees in the corners. - South Carolina returns two starters and eight letterwinners from last season’s squad that posted a 25-9 overall record, matching the Carolina record for total wins. - Carolina owns an 79-29 (.731) all-time record in season openers, including a perfect 10-0 record in the last 10 seasons. The last season-opening loss for the Gamecocks came against the Ohio Valley’s Tennessee Tech during the 2000-01 season, as the Golden Eagles edged the Gamecocks, 73-67. The Gamecocks earned an 84-69 victory over Norfolk State in last season’s lidlifter. - Those returning starters feature the only backcourt in the SEC with two 1,000-point scorers, in senior guards Sindarius Thornwell and Duane Notice. The duo accounted for 24.2 points and 6.1 assists per game last season. - Thornwell was named to the SEC All-Defensive Team last March, while Notice was named the league’s Sixth Man Of the Year. - The Gamecocks return just 49.4 percent of their scoring from a year ago, with the departure of three senior starters in Michael Carrera (14.5 ppg), Laimonas Chatkevicius (10.2 ppg) and Mindaugas Kacinas (9.9 ppg). - The Gamecocks began the 2015-16 season 15-0, their best start since the 1933-34 campaign. - Carolina welcomes nine newcomers to the squad this season in Tommy Corchiani, Rakym Felder, Hassani Gravett, Khadim Gueye, Evan Hinson, Kory Holden, Sedee Keita, Maik Kotsar and Ran Tut. - The Gamecocks are undefeated in exhibition contests under the direction of Frank Martin with wins over Kentucky Wesleyan (2012-13), USC Aiken (2013-14), Benedict (2014-15), Allen (2015-16) and Newberry (107-89).

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The South Carolina men's basketball team (1-0) opened the 2016-17 regular season with an 85-76 victory over Louisiana Tech (0-1) Friday night. Four Gamecock starters were in double-figures, led by senior guard Sindarius Thornwell, who poured in 18 points. The Lancaster, S.C., native filled up the stat sheet leading the team in rebounds (7) and assists (6).
Senior guard Duane Notice (17), sophomore guard PJ Dozier (17) and sophomore forward Chris Silva (11) were the other South Carolina starters in double figures. Dozier's 17 points were a new career-high.
The Gamecocks jumped out to a 7-2 lead to start the game behind five points from Dozier. The Gamecocks extended their lead to 16-6 after Thornwell hit a 3-pointer with 12:49 left in the first half.
South Carolina's half court defense was suffocating in the first 10 minutes, as they held the Bulldogs to 29 percent shooting from the field. Louisiana Tech finished half one 11-of-29 from the field (37.9 percent).
The Bulldogs closed the gap to 18-16 with 10:24 left, but Carolina pushed the lead back to nine at 36-27 with 2:36 to play in the half after back-to-back 3s from senior guard Justin McKie and sophomore guard Hassani Gravett.
Gravett ended the first half with an exclamation point as he tipped in a Notice 3-point miss at the buzzer. Carolina led 42-31 at the break as the, Villa Rica, Ga. native's, tip-in gave the team its biggest lead of the first half at 11.
Thornwell led all scorers at halftime with nine points on 4-of-8 shooting. He also had five rebounds and three assists. Junior forward Ran Tut had a nice first half off the bench, dropping four points and tying for the team lead in rebounds with five. Notice had eight points, Dozier seven and Gravett seven to round out Carolina's scoring in the opening period. Carolina out-rebounded La Tech 22-18 in half one.
In the second half, the Bulldogs cut the deficit to seven with 14:13 left after a 3-pointer by sophomore guard Derric Jean from the right wing. La Tech's Jacobi Boykins stole the ball at half court finishing with an emphatic dunk at the other end to cut the lead to 59-54. He was whistled for a technical foul after the play. Notice missed both free throws but Silvia put the Gamecocks back up by seven after a dunk on the ensuing possession off a great dish from Gravett.
La Tech's Daquan Bracy would cut the lead to four at 65-61, knocking down a 3-pointer with 7:58 left. Thornwell would answer the basket with a fast break 3 of his own from the left corner to put Carolina back up seven with 5:56 on the clock. The Bulldogs answered, but Silva increased the lead to nine with a 3-point play with 4:31 left after beating Jean to the hole for the and-one bucket.
Thornwell and Silva again halted La Tech's momentum after bringing Colonial Life Arena to its feet with two straight transition dunks, pushing the lead to 80-70 with 2:37 left, and the Gamecocks would close the nine-point win.
KEY STATS
South Carolina held Louisiana Tech to three field goals in the final 6:12 of the game, including a 4:10 stretch with zero baskets from the field.
NOTABLE
Sophomore guard PJ Dozier tallied a career-high with 17 points. Dozier hit 5-of-9 from the floor, including 2-of-3 from deep. Carolina held La Tech's leading returning scorer, Eric McCree to just eight points in 31 minutes. He was just 1-of-8 from the field. McCree averaged 16.2 points per game for the Bulldogs last season. Redshirt sophomore guard Hassani Gravett, freshman big man Khadim Gueye, freshman forward Maik Kotsar and junior forward Ran Tut made their Gamecock debuts. Kotsar's first career points came on the game's first basket. Today's game was the team's first regular season game on the new floor at Colonial Life Arena. Gravett led all bench scorers in points (7) and minutes (24). Redshirt junior forward Jarrell Holliman logged a new career-high with 14 minutes played. He also scored his first career points after going 2-for-2 from the field.
UP NEXT South Carolina continues its stretch of three games in five days to open the 2016-17 campaign when it hosts Holy Cross on Sunday. Game time vs. the Crusaders is set for 6 p.m. ET on the SEC Network with Kevin Fitzpatrick (pxp) and Dane Bradshaw (analyst) on the call.

Welcome. thanks, as always, for the lineups, rgs. per the frank martin recipe, south carolina has some serious size and what looks like physical toughness. their size at the guard positions is particularly concerning. we'll have little choice but to play zone against these guys, although that is likely the case for us regardless of opponent. this is the kind of game i'm especially glad we've got carm and scott on our sidelines as we will need to throw a bunch of defensive wrinkles at south carolina to neutralize that size and also capitalize on the open shots that our offense generates.

You are certainly welcome. Thornwell was a dominant force in their opener. I am not sure HC has a counter for him. (Having 6'10" and 6'9" up front with a 7'0" backup is impressive size indeed.)

My wife and I do watch regularly, but not religiously. He did die under the wall.
Mag Mar Tun Doh Weg is a character in the fourth season. He is a giant and a member of Mance Rayder's army. He is more commonly referred to by the wildlings as "Mag the Mighty". He is played by guest star Neil Fingleton and only appears in "The Watchers on the Wall".
During the Battle of Castle Black, Mag approaches the Wall on the back of a mammoth. He rides up to the front gate and dismounts, at which point he and Dongo take the mammoth and turn it around while several wildlings tie ropes to it, then they tie the other end of the ropes to the gate's supports. While the mammoth tries to pull the gate open, men of the Night's Watch throw down flaming barrels of tar, which explode and drive the mammoth off. Dongo attempts to chase after it, but this brings him within the firing arc of a large ballista mounted atop the Wall. The ballista bolt impales him from behind and he is killed.
Mag is enraged at the death of his fellow giant and bellows out a fearsome cry. His already incredible strength swelled with anger, Mag manages to lift the massive gate with his bare hands. He succeeds in passing underneath, though it slides closed again when he releases it. Mag then charges through the icy tunnel to the portcullis in the middle. Grenn, Donnel Hill, Cooper, and three others are waiting for him and terrified, but Grenn rallies his men by leading them in reciting the oath of the Night's Watch, finishing just as Mag collides with the gate. After the battle ends, Jon Snow and Samwell Tarly find Mag's body in the tunnel beneath the Wall, along with those of the men he fought, who successfully held the gate at the cost of their own lives.[2]
When Jon treats with Mance in the wildling camp, Mance asks what happened to the giant who managed to get inside the gate, but who never came out. Jon explains that he died, killing six black brothers including Jon's friend Grenn. Saddened, Mance tells Jon that the giant's name was Mag the Mighty, the giants' king - the last of a bloodline which stretched back to long before the arrival of the First Men in Westeros. In mutual respect, Mance and Jon drink to the memory of both Mag and Grenn.[1]

(Having 6'10" and 6'9" up front with a 7'0" backup is impressive size indeed.) their size in the backcourt is the most impressive/imposing to me. they have to have one of the biggest backcourts in america. thank God we've got the zone looks we do to keep those guards out of the lane.
