Result? Not exactly cause and effect.

Well, we won yesterday's first four, 8-4, then got SHUT OUT the next two! 0-14 or 0-15.
As the daffy Jimmy Patsos commented near the end of the game, "you don't lose too many games you shut the other team out for 8 minutes".

Anyone think the trajectory is "up"?
If you asked me on January 23, the answer was no. If you ask me on January 31, the answer is yes.

Unquestionably the best all around game this season, or perhaps any in the last 2.5 seasons. Team effort with more assists than turnovers.
Louth definitely on an upward trajectory as is Caleb. JM still up and down. Townsel looked good. Luc finally reduced his really bad pass numbers and hit shots that he’s been missing.
The biggest thing was the team had every opportunity to collapse when Gates had to sit but they did not.
If they can string another win or two, I’ll start to feel more optimistic.

I don't know about the team trajectory......but I will say some of the young guys are starting to show more promise. I am hoping this team is starting to channel an inner March 2016 persona a month early.

Go back and watch the combinations, minutes, and match ups on the floor the last two games. I think those patterns are better and while I think Louth should get about 25 minutes the team play appears to be better.
Improving will require better play over the next two weeks or so. It was nice to see the team play hard and get a couple of much needed wins, but I need to see this play out with the team going around .500 in league playto say Nelson should get another year— a hopeful, but doubting Thomas

If HC gets a couple more quality wins and generally competes well in its losses the rest of the way, and if the majority of current players are retained, there will be adequate evidence to support the retention of the current coach for at least the duration of his contract. Hopefully last night’s win marks a turn upward for the program.

The moving average has increased, but if you use a long enough time frame, we have a LONG way to go still.

Last night was the best win of Nelson's tenure. Everything came together and the players gelled tremendously. If this is what Nelson envisioned for 2+ seasons & it sustains, he'll be back. The team not only played with maximum effort, but the talent really shined. Kyrell Luc looked like a special, special player last night. Let's capitalize on the momentum, pick up a few more Ws and evaluate those performances accordingly. This was a real positive step in my book. While my confidence in this staff waned in recent weeks, I hope they prove me wrong and those recruiting battle wins over the past few seasons are validated in the W/L column.

The moving average has increased, but if you use a long enough time frame, we have a LONG way to go still. As bad as the beginning of the season was, there were times that the team looked pretty good - the first halves of Q, AF and Fairfield come to mind. They just could not put it together for even close to 40 minutes. Most here blamed the coaching, and after the Loyola fiasco, I pretty much came to that conclusion also. But after the last two games, who knows. They looked dammed good last night and appear to be peaking when it matters most, in February, There was a guy around here years ago that said that "it is all about three games in March." We'll see.

Ray Donovan show/movie had a line about what the father Mickey taught the kids-- how to forget. Last night and perhaps the Lehigh game made people hope, and five or six more wins might help people forget. But if followed by a first-round exit from the tournament, where are we?
Let's focus on today and enjoy that the team shot the ball well and defended with blocks around the rim. Playing three or four more games might give us a complete picture- positive or negative TBD

Good observations, thank you.
To be clear, I hate subscribing to the "Three Games in March" philosophy. By the nature of the league and the auto-bid, of course it puts tremendous importance on it. But I want to use every game as an opportunity to showcase our best, dominate an opponent thoroughly, and win. No matter who, where, or when. It raises lots of eyebrows and even more controversy for a team that has languished in the bottom of national rankings and their own league to win an auto-bid and appear in the NCAAs with a sub-.500 record. Bubble teams and bigger programs point at those examples as reasons to change the system, and limit access.
Anyway, just win em all and we won't have any issues.

Baby steps. Next thing I'm watching: Nelson has one exactly ONE game outside of Massachusetts in his HC tenure. Let's see if we can continue to take this burst of competitiveness out of state.

I wonder if this team might have stumbled into something - play physical, pound the paint. While the 3-point shooting was good last night, the team won (on the offensive end, at least) by going inside. The "chuck-and-duck" approach ain't working with this bunch. The refs let a lot of contact go last night and HC rose to the challenge.
Obviously Luc was the star. But credit also to Louth for his presence in the paint, Kenney for his D (some spectacular blocks the last two games), and Townsel for some timely buckets.

At least one ref, John Gaffney, is a veteran Big East and one or more other high major conference ref, who has done some second weekend NCAA games. I do not know about the other two.

We "lost" the first four minutes again last night, but it was 14-10, BU hit some bombs; and overall, HC looked, shall we say, competent. Usually when we've come out ahead at the beginning, it's been because the opponents can't hit the broad side of a barn, simple as that.

Basketball 101. It may even be in the required summer reading before classes start.
If you're shooting like CRAP, stop hoisting them up. Attack the paint, get shots around the basket, and get to the free throw line. If HC doesn't have the shooters, and conversely, if their defense is suspect, you slow the pace of the game and number of opponent possessions. Get high percentage shots (at the hoop and at the free-throw line). And later if the opponent adjusts and goes zone or packs it in to defend the rack, you open up the perimeter for better looks outside.

Been more than a few Celts games like that this year, one in particular they were 4-42 from 3 point distance (most of them pretty good shots, but, so what, if you can't make them). Last night, in crunch time, Tatum, who'd been pretty substandard all night, did exactly what you said to do; got rewarded with a trip to the line !
