Stony Brook accepts invitation to join CAA, source says
Newsday By Roger Rubin Updated January 24, 2022 8:35 PM
Stony Brook has accepted an invitation to join the Colonial Athletic Association, according to a university official, and the move will be announced by conference commissioner Joe D’Antonio on Tuesday morning. The official requested anonymity because the formal announcement had not been made.
The move will put the Seawolves in the same conference as Long Island rival Hofstra, not only raising the stakes on their annual men’s basketball game but adding a second meeting each season. Stony Brook is expected to begin competing in the CAA in the 2022-23 school year.
The Seawolves already play football in the CAA. The rest of their programs currently compete in the America East Conference.
Stony Brook will not be the only school that the CAA adds. Monmouth is expected to depart the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference for the Colonial. There could be other additions as well.
James Madison has announced that it is leaving the CAA to join the football-centric Sun Belt Conference. JMU has won or shared the conference title in five of the last seven football seasons.

Fine with me. Pleased Holy Cross is not paying exit and entrance fees and being banned from conference championships for a year or more.

12 football teams in a conference (swapping Monmouth for JMU, SBU already belongs) is ENOUGH. The CAA is not the SEC.
Might make sense to have another hoop only school in that league. Entirely depends upon geography.

When Colgate was good in Football I assume their board kicked around jumping to the CAA. Also assume cooler heads in their administration prevailed. Wisely.

Latest: they didn't heed my advice, added Hampton. So 12 hoop schools (ok) and 13 football schools (NOT!)

If CAA Football only associate members check out the PL as a backup if they get pressure from the CAA, would we want to sacrifice an OOC date to add a FB associate member and reduce our NCAA chances by 1/7 or 1/8 whichever is the correct math?
For me, no. We're in a sweet spot now.

Who's filling the opened spots in the America East and MAAC? Gotta think there could be some sort of PL implications here...

For me, no. We're in a sweet spot now. If we had opportunity to add a quality all-sports member with football that would be the priority if league ever expands.

No one is leaving the pL, and no one is coming to the pL.

LIU would make sense for the A-East if they want to keep a presence in the NYC area. Wagner and Bryant were two schools potentially linked to the MAAC. Commissioner has stated that he wants to get to 12 to protect the league from further poaching, while Pitino and Masiello are advocating staying at 10

We should be in the MAAC for basketball. Why? I know the geography is better for us but that’s about it. Not sure we want to trade a one-bid league where everyone is fighting with one hand tied behind their back for another one-bid league where we’re the only ones with one hand tied behind our back.

Whatever happened to The Catholic League?
(Granted, the MAAC would more or less fit the bill of "a" Catholic league.)

When Colgate was good in Football I assume their board kicked around jumping to the CAA. Also assume cooler heads in their administration prevailed. Wisely. And meanwhile I guarantee zero people affiliated with the CAA were kicking around the idea of adding Colgate.

Whatever happened to The Catholic League? (Granted, the MAAC would more or less fit the bill of "a" Catholic league.) There are two. One's called the Big East. The other is called the MAAC. One is slightly more prestigious and exclusive than the other.

We should be in the MAAC for basketball. Hard pass. The one school in the MAAC thats a natural rival for Holy Cross has possibly been trying to leave for the CAA (Fairfield). And one of their top hoops programs just left -- Monmouth for the CAA.

One is slightly more prestigious and exclusive than the other. You just have to drive by a Catholic Church to get into the MAAC.
