A few posters on this site have been eyeing tomorrow’s game v Lafayette for HC’s first win of the season. Despite recent success v the Leopards (last time they beat HC was 2015), I would not take an HC win tomorrow for granted. And if HC loses, it will not (in my mind) mean the program has sunk to new depths or the coach is in over his head … as many posters here are likely to conclude.
Lafayette is improving (slowly). Pat Myers is in his 4th year as head coach. Lafayette has been increasing funding for their program. Don’t have the exact number at hand, but they have considerably more scholarship money for men’s lacrosse than HC. It’s starting to show results. They’re still losing more than they’re winning, but the scores aren’t as lopsided as they were a year or two ago. Almost all of their offensive production is from freshmen and sophomores. They had the PL rookie of the year last season. So they’re also likely to be better next year than this year.
HC is obviously struggling this season. I have a lot of respect for the players; they hustle, play hard, and are showing some signs of improvement as the season progresses. But HC lacks any dominant players (maybe Conlin excepted), especially on offense. Without a few guys who can consistently beat their defenders and keep opposing defenses off balance, it’s very hard to generate offense in lacrosse. That is primarily a personnel issue, not a coaching issue.
It’s going to take Reppert a few years to get a stable of higher caliber players at HC. The recruit ratings on Inside Lacrosse suggest that he’s already having success with that effort (who knows how accurate those ratings are).
A win tomorrow would be great. But a loss won’t tell us anything that isn’t already apparent … about HC or Lafayette.

fyg, I believe that 2021 ROY at Lafayette took his credentials and transferred out - sound familiar ? 'Pards are 3-8 overall (0-5 in PL) but their best loss is 14-12 vs. Loyola which supports Wheeler's point - but I like the Purple tmro to get that first W

Lehman is on Lafayette’s roster this year and has 20 goals and 19 assists.

HC trailing Laf 9-7 at the half but there's been about a 20 minute (so far) weather delay - this will probably also delay the start of the spring football game

2-4 last year with one OT loss. 0-11 so far this year. Construction costs are soaring and predictions of an upcoming recession are increasing. Could HC slow down it's ambitious new construction and renovation schedule and redirect some of the funds to shore up existing aspects of the school like athletics?

So this is the coach they hired? Peter Burke went 7-7 and then 4-3 in a shortened season and they get this guy to replace him?
0-11? Really? So the kids he inherited won - at least 50% of the time. The new coach comes in should in theory be able to recruit coming from Maryland. Honestly no clue how his recruits have been, but not good enough to get them to win a game.
This program was decent with Burke. Now it's laughable. Hughes is a lax guy - another coach who should be gone.
Need to hold coaches to a higher standard on the hill. The spring is embarrassing up there. Fact, not opinion.

The current freshmen were in the second half of their senior year at the time he was hired. Most HS lax players, as you probably know, commit during their junior year.

other than the 2 or 3 kids who transferred in this year (and who are contributors … #44 from U of Vt is a player).. all others were Burke recruits.. the team has been losing by large 2nd half margins due, IMO, to the lack of depth. The real measure will be year 3 when a few more transfers filter in, his recruits reach the Hill and the current underclassmen learn his system… agree that the losing by the Spring teams (of all sports) is unacceptable and should be a factor in retention after several seasons. The length of time is for others to debate — but I would think having a winning PL record after 5 seasons should be the outside window. The overall record will be a function of scheduling (Syracuse which is an automatic L and UMass Lowell a good prospect of a W … for example only).
The recent results from the 2019 and 2020 teams shows that a 500 PL and overall win percentage (with a competitive OOC schedule) is achievable with the current admission/funding mix.
