How is everyone doing as we start this snowstorm this morning?
Local RI weather are saying it's bad but not comparable to the 1978 #1 snowstorm. Looks like only 2-3 inches here so far but it hasn't even started to really get going yet. Winds are picking up. The Providence bishop has dispensed Catholics from Mass this weekend but says the churches will be open and possibly Masses tomorrow for those who feel they can safely attend. Our Saturday vigil Mass cancelled.

North Jersey - we have about 3 inches with snow supposed to continue until 7:00 pm. tonight. Apparently not as bad as right along the coast.

If they are required to remain indoors, how do they get toKimball to pick up food? Has HC installed something like the once legendary Assumption tunnels between buildings?

One break most of us are getting is that there's no snow on the ground to begin with. One thing about the "Big One" in 1978 was that there was a 20+ inch snowfall two weeks earlier and very little of it had melted. No place to put the snow from Storm #2, especially around intersections.
Cleanup should be considerably easier.

In Answer: How is everyone doing? I'm doing fine. For some reason we have avoided the cold & snow. Stay warm & safe.

One of my favorite Pats memories was a Sunday game in December vs the Dolphins after a big Saturday dumping.
Some of the seats seemed encased in snow, but the crowd was very large. Tedy Bruschi got a pick six and there was a "whiteout" of sorts after he scored, a celebratory shower of snow let loose from the stands.

In 1978, it was my first winter in the Syracuse area ("Central New York," not as we "downstaters called it "Upstate New York"), so when when everyone in New England was complaining and suffering through that big one, I quickly realized that was the new normal for me for the next 9 years. So, it's all a matter of perspective. Of course I'm more than 40 years older and it's harder to cope with large snowfalls than when I was in my 30s.

The warmth of the "Endless Summer" sun beckons.

I recall from trips to Buffalo that people there said they were from "western New York." As for snow and cold, everything is a matter of perspective. I recall my two Januarys at Northwestern University graduate school when it felt warm if it got up into the mid-20s.Because the campus was on the west side of Lake Michigan, it didn't seem to snow very heavily there, but what did fall stuck around. Usually, the snow was so dry and cold that it would squeak when you walked on it.

There was a ubiquitous highlight video where they timed the beat of the music to snow being thrown up in the stands.

Not to be confused w/1970 when they threw snowballs in anger at Harvard Stadium vs the Vikings. The Sullivans made no effort whatsoever to get the snow out of the stands.

When we were looking at colleges with my daughter we went to Minneapolis one summer to look at Macalester and Carleton. The heat was almost unbearable. Our guide at Macalester, commenting on the tunnels and enclosed walkways between buildings, said that it sometimes got so frigid in the winter that it was to cold too snow. I had never heard of this before.

I happened to go outside on what then was the coldest day ever in the Syracuse area ever - -26 degrees. Not wind chill, actual temperature. I went outside just to say that I did. While I didn't stay outside long, I was surprised how "warm" it felt because there was zero wind and dry. I will say that my house there (my first, a small starter home) had more insulation than any I've ever had anywhere since. There was something like 18" of insulation in the attic and despite the generally cold winters, the heating was all electric thanks to hydroelectric from Niagara Falls and the nuclear power plant. All utilities in the neighborhood were underground to help ensure power lines didn't come down in the heavy snow.
However, it is not the cold but the snow that Syracuse is noted for. I apologize to all who've read this before from me but Syracuse gets more snow than any "major" city in the United States - the average snowfall is 120 inches annually. It's "lake effect" snow off Lake Erie that apparently flies right over Buffalo. Generally dry and light unlike what I was used to on Long Island - like shoveling water down there. I'm hoping that's the kind of weather here in RI today. Supposedly it is while the Cape is supposed to get the heavy, wet stuff.
Good luck, all!!

So far, doesn't seem as bad as predicted in central MA.
Note to RSG. Kimball was open to 8:00 last night. Lock down didn't start until 11:00
Unfortunately, I don't think Kimball has proper trays any more. New ones are supposedly not suitable for use as sleds

Yes, the weather channel's saying that Dennis will end up with 8 inches. Must be heavy stuff compared to Metro West, where I shoveled the walkway 3 or 4 times and even cleared out a good chunk of the lawn for our dog.

To Tim’s point, one of the things no one told me when my wife and kids were trying to get me to agree to a dog was that I would have to clear a path around the house for the dog whenever it snows more than a couple of inches.

I was born and raised on Long Island and can sort of understand that statement. However, I'll bet you never lived in Syracuse! If you don't do it for the dog, you do it for yourself. Trust me!
