What's up with our media dept ?! so disappointed with what they generate after men's and women's games = no coach / player quotes in game recap = no video on game recap (you have to go to the team's twitter page for 10-15 second clips)) = very limited coverage there, i.e. last night a one minute interview with Nelson and no players = here's what BU put out on the recap of the game (not nec to go to a twitter) - '5 minute edited recap video' and '9 minute audio interview with coach Jones "after a loss" goterriers.com/news/2022/1/31/holy-cross-outlasts-mens-basketball-75-70.aspx= I think we can ask for more from our guys comments ?

No offense, but you'd have to be an idiot to think Brett Nelson should not be back for Year 4 given what he inherited and has had to deal with at HC. This team took a few second half haymakers from one of the most experienced teams in the country, got back up, and hit them right back even harder. Would anyone have thought this was the 323rd most experienced team in the country (on the road) going up against #33 tonight? If we can keep this core intact and continue to develop (both players and coaches), HCBN has this program in a position to bring HC to a place that we haven't been in 13 years. Go Cross Go!!! I'll make you a deal.
I'll admit to being a total idiot after the results of the next three games with Army, Colgate, and Loyola are in. OK?
But.....you have to agree to not disappear if things go south after last night.
It seems to me that "when the going gets tough, bringbackcaro opts for radio silence".
Fair?
Did you miss me that much?

Today's ramblings. . .
All wins are good, especially when they've been really hard to come by
A week ago Gates lit up Bucknell for 32 of the team's 65 points. On one hand, it's cool to see a guy try to carry a team on his back. On the other hand, I'm not sure how good it is for long term success of a team. Last night, Gates sat a lot with early foul trouble. Someone had to carry some load. Others stepped up. If I told you before the game that Gates would not score in double figures, does anyone predict a win?
I think Luc had a lot of home town buddies at the game. He certainly put on a show for them
Kenney had another game where a lot of nice things happened that don't stand out in a box score. For example, at one point he came in and battled for a rebound. He didn't get it, but by the time the BU guy won that battle he was a little off balance and stepped on the end line. Little things like that add up.
Sometimes your guy just beats you. It's basketball. It happens a lot. Sometimes you get beat because you mess up. Less understandable. Back on the Kenney front, a good shot blocker makes up for some of those sins. Two games in a row now, Kenney has done that job. I commented earlier that Kenney had a big game against Harvard and kind of disappeared after that. Two games might not be a trend, but it is more promising than the one game outlier.
Weird/unlucky bit at the end of the first half. BU throws up a not great 3 as the shot clock is winding down. Martindale gets a big piece of ball that doesn't get halfway to the hoop. BU guy seemingly not in position to do anything has the block come right to him and barely beats the shot clock. At the other end Martindale is in trouble around the foul line. Spots Dorsey and passes to him, unfortunately just as Dorsey cuts. No other player around so the ball should have gone out of bounds except it hits the ref square and stays in. BU guy gets it for an easy fast break 2. Four points for BU just like that on back to back freaky plays.
Fewest number of Crusader fans I've ever seen at the roof. Almost zero outside of player families and guests. Good thing that Luc is popular and brought a lot of friends.
Math time ; Last night's win guarantees that HC's conference record will be better than the 2-16 in 2020 At 3-5 (.375) HC is ahead of last year's 5-11 (.312) pace
OK. Being better than horrible is nothing to write home about, but two weeks ago after the American blow out, it seemed like a stretch

“Better than horrible” is pretty catchy. Could replace Attack and Serve.

Probably needed this win to have any chance of finishing in the top 6 and avoiding the first round game as well as one of the top two seeds in the quarters. At 3-5, we’re in 7th behind BU who is 6-5. Lots of ground to make up but it’s a least a small possibility.

Humphrey only played in middle of first half I think for 5 minutes . He seemed to be playing good D on McCoy until a couple of screens on him resulting in 2 outside scores by McCoy . On offense he didn’t do much of anything except McCoy stole ball off his dribble . I don’t think he played in the second half but it could’ve been just that the other players especially Montgomery were playing so good so no way for him to get more minutes.

Dorsey subbed for Bo, at least in the second half

Everybody's biorhythms or whatever you want to call it can't be at their best every game. Then there are matchups that are different for each game. Just projecting but I sense Nelson is keeping his small band of "us against the world" brothers together regarding the ebb and flow of playing time.
A.L. is a mystery. But perhaps not that puzzling. Yesterday's pace might have been hard for him at this point.

At this point, we must be preserving a potential year of eligibility for Lewis. Not sure why as that year likely would not be at HC unless he is suiting up every game with a season-ending injury. Maybe he requested not to play token minutes to keep his options open down the road.

SPORTS By Liam O'Murchu GW Hatchet Jan 24, 2022 2:55 AM
The Atlantic 10 petitioned the NCAA earlier this month to allow redshirt players limited participation without jeopardizing a full year of eligibility to help combat COVID-19 roster shortages, a move that could help GW remedy its shortages throughout the remainder of the season. Current NCAA rules prohibit players from redshirting after they have played in a game, but A-10 Commissioner Bernadette McGlade is asking that players designated for redshirt be able to play in up to four games in emergency scenarios while maintaining their extra year of eligibility, The Athletic reported earlier this month. The waiver would apply to all NCAA Division I college men’s and women’s basketball players, although it would only apply for this season.
The proposal was submitted on Jan. 4 with the hope that it would be instituted immediately. But the NCAA requested clarification on a few points, and it was part of the agenda for the men’s and women’s basketball oversight committees, which met on Jan. 18 at the NCAA Convention.
The results of the meeting are yet to be released.
footnote Austin Lewis has played 6 games and last game played was the 13th game which was against Navy in this 30 game season.”.
To qualify for a medical redshirt a basketball player must sustain an “incapacitating injury or illness.” The injury or illness does not have to be related to basketball, but must take place after the first day of classes in the athlete’s senior year of high school. To gain a medical redshirt for a specific season, the athlete’s illness or injury must occur before the first game of the second half of the team’s schedule. If the team plays an odd number of games, the exact midseason contest is considered part of the second half. For example, if a basketball team plays 25 games, the injury or illness must occur before the start of the team’s 13th game. Games played in postseason tournaments, such as a conference tournament or the NCAA or NIT tournaments, count among the team’s total games played.
Games Played
To gain a medical redshirt, the athlete cannot compete in more than 30 percent of her team’s games within a season, not counting contests officially designated as scrimmages or exhibition games. When such computations are made, fractions are rounded up. For example, if a team plays 27 games, the exact 30 percent mark is 8.1. For the purposes of medical redshirt eligibility, therefore, the player may compete in nine games and still be eligible for a medical redshirt.

Shout out due to BU fan Majestic Mapp, who was the only one on their board (granted there were only about 5 posts in total about the game) to give HC credit for the win, particularly citing the defense. I always respect fans who acknowledge that both teams can actually have something to do with the outcome of a game.

Yesterday's pace might have been hard for him at this point. If Lewis isn't ready, I totally agree with the decision in the last couple of games. I don't think that logic applies to a game in which you're getting blown out. No reason not to give the kid a little run if you're down 20.

I thought Mo Cassara made an interesting comparison when discussing Luc, if you can remember back about 15 years ago: BC's Tyrese Rice. I'd post a highlights link, but I don't want hchoops or KY Crusader coming up to Mass to kick the snot out of me.

Think I crossed paths with his brother Scientific back in high school at a summer hoops camp. As I recall a really quick PG.

I always respect fans who acknowledge that both teams can actually have something to do with the outcome of a game. I support BU, but if the team gets outplayed I'll say so (although I try to highlight anything positive). Coach Nelson must have done his homework because HC made it difficult for BU players, especially Mathon and McCoy, to get to their sweet spots on offense. The blocked shots towards the end were spectacular and saved the game. I also thought some of the box outs by HC players were fantastic to secure rebounds. Small things that make a big difference (I saw the end of the HC/Lehigh game so maybe that's a point of emphasis). For BU, hopefully this is a case of two steps forward, one step back. But for now, congrats on the win, HC.

I don't think anyone has credited Coach Nelson with doing his homework and teaching his team to master the small details that win games before. Congratulations Coach.
