There's a difference between buying an electric shaver made in China, versus saying, "I will compete in a globally-televised event against my home country and wave the flag of this p-o-s communist nation." Well people think Becky Hammon is a great person for doing that with the Russians

Normally I would say “good for her” and “go for it,” but not in this case.
I can’t jump on board to support someone cashing in with the Chinese businesses (government) unless it is Taiwan which happens not to be suppressing an entire people.
And I wouldn’t support her in either case of renouncing her U.S. citizenship as she would normally have to do or the other case where China gave her an exemption of convenience.
Imagine if she just had to make do with non-Chinese endorsements? Probably would only be a mere $10-15 million a year. Poor thing.

Embracing capitalism by competing for China. Very 2022 of her.

I wonder if Stanford will now count her as a "foreign" student even though she was born in the US?

Will she be getting a scholarship even though she could endow a good dozen of them?

Not if it was based on "need."

Apparently Gu was accepted a year ago to Stanford and this is a ‘gap’ year (she graduated a year early from a very well-regarded high school) for training/Olympics. She was a US Presidential Scholar nominee (here in NY that means essentially a perfect score SAT/ACT single seating as a threshold requirement and I imagine CA is similar.)

Her Mom is a Standard grad. Gu speaks fluent Mandarin Chinese and has visited her grandmother in China most summers of her life

Is it a Chinese tradition or part of their culture to sell your citizenship if the price is high enough?

At some point, likely after Olympics, we'll probably find out whether or not she has renounced her U.S. citizenship. If I had to bet, I'd think not, and the Chinese simply gave her an exemption to be on their team.

If this hasn’t been the worst Winter Olympics ever from the US perspective it’s gotta be up there.
From the Genocide backdrop thru dismal Covid restrictions thru an appalling Russian figure skater doping scandal thru a generally disappointing American showing (except for the American representing China).

The good news is very few people are paying attention.

Is it a Chinese tradition or part of their culture to sell your citizenship if the price is high enough? Money talks everywhere. Some rich Americans renounce their U.S. citizenship for tax purposes. That's a step too far for me, but I'm not multi-cultural.
