The Diocese of Providence is celebrating its 150th anniversary and the diocesan newspaper, the "Rhode Island Catholic," has been doing a series on the previous bishops in chronological order.
They are up to #3, Bishop William A. Hickey. He was a priest in Springfield prior to becoming coadjutor "with the right of succession" to his predecessor who apparently had some bad luck with his two prior auxilliary bishops, the first dying after only 8 months and the second after about a year.
Bishop Hickey was born in Worcester May 21, 1869 and after attending public schools in Worcester enrolled at Holy Cross and graduated from there in 1890.
He became full bishop of Providence in 1921 when his predecessor died 2 years after he got to Providence.
Among other things, he helped raise $500,000 to reduce the debt of Providence College.
He died on October 4, 1933.
