On the Addy Cross layup off the Cara steal, there's a decent chance she would have muffed that shot earlier in the season. Playing with more confidence now. Coaching?

A-Cross confidence now is night/day compared to the early season. I am sure coaching plays a role but sometimes just having the chance to be out there and play through mistakes/ gain experience can mean a lot. Cross knows she's going to get minutes and that kind of security can just allow a player to play without worrying about being pulled. She's playing really really well now. Both ends too. Good for her.

Army was 12-8, 6-4 coming in. Making this thumping that much more impressive. Good D on Fallon meant she wasn't a factor. Only one assist for her, only four for Army. So the pass recipients faced shut down D, too. Must have been a good HC game plan to go along with the Cadets being off on a noontime road game. Perhaps the driving conditions Friday altered their travel routine.

Good for her. I agree she is playing great, best defender on the team, but frankly, she's been a great defender her whole career. She had a slow start offensively the first 3 games, missing some bunnies, but since then she has been the model of consistency and has been her whole career. She has played the same since day one - she rarely takes more than 5 shots a game, I think she has only had double figure attempts twice in 3 years. I think MM's pre-season praise may have raised expectations that might have been misplaced, at least offensively.

Addisyn Cross takes charge on defense for Holy Cross women's basketball “Sacrificing my body, and doing the dirty work for the team is really my role as a player,” she says Jennifer Toland Telegram & Gazette
WORCESTER — Holy Cross’ 11-point lead on Lafayette dwindled to three by the end of the third quarter Thursday night, and the Crusaders needed a catalyst for the closing 10 minutes. Junior guard Addisyn Cross was more than happy to take on that challenge. In the fourth quarter, Cross had two rebounds, a block, an assist and a layup, and she drew two offensive fouls, including a charge with 6:25 to play. “Sacrificing my body,” the 5-foot-7 Cross said, “and doing the dirty work for the team is really my role as a player.” Cross finished with 4 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals and HC beat the Leopards, 59-50. “She is such a spark plug,” Holy Cross coach Maureen Magarity said.
The Crusaders, who got back to campus from Easton, Pennsylvania, at 1 a.m. Friday, had a quick turnaround for Saturday’s game against Army at the Hart Center, but it did not affect them. With another outstanding defensive effort and senior Avery LaBarbera’s 14th double-double of the season, Holy Cross downed the Black Knights, 74-54. “The short turnaround was good because we had the momentum coming off the big road win,” said LaBarbera, who scored 23 points and added 10 rebounds and 5 assists. Sophomore Janelle Allen added 18 points and sophomore Bronagh Power-Cassidy 13.
HC (15-7, 9-2 Patriot League) entered Saturday one game behind Boston University in the PL standings. The Terriers hosted Lehigh later Saturday. HC held Army (12-9, 6-5) to 33% field goal shooting and forced 16 turnovers. “Our coaches do a great job of scouting and personnel on the other team’s players,” Cross said. “We’ve really just been sticking to that scout, and defense is all about effort. Collectively we’re putting in the effort and that defense is leading to transition offense and we’re doing a great job of that.” Cross, along with LaBarbera, provide HC with two premier defenders in the backcourt. LaBarbera ranks seventh in the league in steals per game (1.5) and Cross is 11th (1.4). The Crusaders have the PL’s second-ranked scoring defense (55.9 ppg).
Cross knows her assignment every game. She will be defending the opponent’s best guard. On Saturday, she matched up primarily against Army senior Alisa Fallon. Cross held Fallon scoreless in the first half. Fallon finished with seven points on 2-of-7 shooting. In the win at Lafayette, Cross limited Abby Antognoli to four points on 2-of-7 shooting. In two games against American this season, Cross held standout Jade Edwards to a total of 15 points. “I think we have a really strong argument for her to be (PL) defensive player of the year,” Magarity said. “Just the players she’s had to go up against night in and night out and what she’s been able to do. Everything she does doesn’t always show up in the box score — the charges she takes, the loose balls, just getting teams out of their rhythm offensively.” Against Army, Cross had 4 points, 4 rebounds and an assist.
With 26 seconds left in first quarter, Cross took a charge under the Army basket. The turnover led to a LaBarbera 3-pointer and a 18-13 HC lead after one. The Crusaders held the Black Knights without a field goal over the final four minutes of the quarter. “I wish there was a stat for charges taken or how many times Addy falls on the floor,” LaBarbera said, “because you can’t find that on any other team, and she’s just great to play with.” Cross was a high school teammate of HC senior Maddie Demski at Villa Maria Academy in Pennsylvania. This season, Villa has 13 alumnae playing college basketball. Villa is where Cross developed her all-out defensive style.
“My coach (Doug Chuzie) really drilled defense into my head,” Cross said. “Coming into college and finding my role as a player, I’ve embraced my role as a defensive stopper. I go into every game with effort and the mindset that I have to do everything I can to get stops. That’s what I’ve been doing, and that’s what I’ll continue to do.” A six-point loss at Lehigh two Fridays ago snapped HC’s five-game winning streak, and the win at Lafayette was a nice boost. The Crusaders have not lost back-to-back games since opening the season with consecutive setbacks to Northeastern and Boston College.
“We got into every game wanting to win,” Cross said, “and when we don’t get that outcome we shift our mindset and learn from those losses. We’ve done a really good job of coming back from a loss and showing what kind of team we are in this league, and I think in the long run, we can really do good things if we keep this mindset from here on out.” —Contact Jennifer Toland at jennifer.toland@telegram.com.
