I just peeked at the Worcester Telegram and lo and behold there is a nice feature article with photos no less, on GG. It even has quotes from HCBN and Kyrell Luc. Near the end of the article, it says he has a year of eligibility left and is weighing his options. He speaks highly of his HC experience.

Academically, is one of his options remaining at HC for another year?

Wouldn’t it be interesting if he were drafted in a few months by the NFL. There was a TE for the Chargers I believe, who played college hoops not football. He was a very good TE for some time in the show.

Academically, is one of his options remaining at HC for another year? If that were the plan from the get go, I don’t think he would be saying he is weighing his options as of now. I believe he would have to choose to become a double major to extend his academic career as an undergrad at HC. Maybe HC is allowing him all the time in the world to do so because normally, he would have to have already made that decision. If his last year will be spent elsewhere, he must have his academics in line to be able to earn his HC degree this Spring. Another question is can you play right away as a grad transfer if you have transferred once as an undergrad.

When Gates walked in the door, he was supposed to sit last year and play in 2021-22 and 2022-23. After he arrived, the rules changes turning last season into a free bonus both in terms of not needing to sit out and also not have it count. I have to believe from the get go, the plan was for him to play here in 2022-23 and there was an academic plan in place for him to be here there years. He might not need a double major. We have no idea how many credits transferred in. We have no idea if he has the same major at HC that he had at New Orleans. We know the rules for being an academic 5th year, but we can only speculate on Gates' academic status when he walked in the door

Why would options be noted in the article if he needs another year to earn his HC degree? Also, I realize we have options all the time. He could choose to leave HC without graduating but it certainly doesn’t sound like that is what he wants to do based based on how he stressed the importance of HC’s academics in his decision to transfer here.

Antonio Gates (Kent State football?) Very good. Did he play football at Kent State? Maybe he played both in college a la Jim Brown. Just checked it out--Gates played basketball at Eastern Michigan and then transferred and played two years at Kent State and was a big scorer and rebounder. There's no record of him playing football. One tight end/basketball player to recall is the great Tony Gonzalez who played both basketball and football at California before starting his long and glorious career in the NFL

And I remember him playing against HC in the Otis Spunkmeyer Classic during the 95-96 season (where Walter Brown dominated them for a half).

Jimmy Graham from the U also turned into a very good TE.

Why football? Has GG played football before?

Another college hoops (Pitt) player who starred as an NFL tight end: Mike Ditka

Why football? Has GG played football before? He has the size to be an NFL tight end, probably has the hands and imho, has a far greater chance to be an NFL player than to play in the NBA.

Reality Check. Gates to the NFL is highly doubtful. Hopefully, Gates to Grad School is his next step.

There is also a "free" article on Coach Chesney signing an extension in the Worcester T&G Sports link at the top of the page.

Peter Gent, tight end with the Cowboys, author of North Dallas Forty.
Never played a down of college football, just in high school. Played hoop for Michigan State.
