Manhattan (0-0) begins the Heather Vulin Era on Friday night with a matchup against Holy Cross (0-0) at Draddy Gymnasium that can be seen live on the Jasper Sports Network. The Jaspers are coming off a 15-16 season, while the Crusaders had a 13-17 record in 2015-16. Manhattan, which notched an 86-54 exhibition win over Nyack, was tabbed to finish tied for seventh in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). Heather Vulin makes her head coaching debut, as the Jaspers (0-0) open the 2016-17 campaign. Manhattan, which went 15-16 a year ago, finished in a seventh-place tie in the MAAC Preseason Poll. Junior guard Amani Tatum was a Preseason First Team All-MAAC selection. A Second Team All-MAAC choice last season, she averaged a team-best 11.9 points per game in 2015-16, and her 3.3 steals per game were fifth-most nationally. Tatum also set a school record with 101 steals. Junior guard Nyasha Irizarry contributed 8.4 points per game last year, and she paced the Jaspers with 1.8 three-pointers a night a season ago. Junior center Kayla Grimme, meanwhile, notched 7.7 points per outing to go along with a team-leading 7.8 rebounds per contest. Grimme recorded 69 blocks last season to establish a new program mark. The Jaspers are back in action on Tuesday night, when Yale (0-0) visits Draddy Gymnasium.

Holy Cross (0-0), which notched a 62-55 exhibition win over Assumption on Sunday, is coming off a 13-17 campaign and was picked to finish fourth in the Patriot League Preseason Poll. The Crusaders lost their top two scorers and their top two rebounders from last season to graduation. Junior guard Infiniti Thomas-Waheed was a Preseason All-Patriot League choice. She averaged 11.8 points and 4.7 rebounds per game last season, both tops among returners. Thomas-Waheed also recorded 2.5 steals per contest in 2015-16 to earn a place on the Patriot League All-Defensive Team. Junior guard Katie Doherty contributed 8.6 points per game last year, and she also led all returning Crusaders with 2.2 assists a night. Junior guard Tricia Byrne, meanwhile, tallied 7.7 points per contest during the 2015-16 season. The Crusaders visit Bryant on Monday before opening their home schedule with a pair of MAAC opponents (Quinnipiac and Marist).

The Crusaders took last year’s matchup, 58-44, at the Hart Center on Dec. 12, 2015, to snap the road team’s four-game winning streak in the series. Manhattan’s last win over the Crusaders was a 66-60 triumph on Nov. 16, 2014. The last time the sides met in Riverdale, Holy Cross came away with a 74-58 victory on Dec. 1, 2013. The Crusaders lead the all-time series 13-9.

This is the 39th season of women’s basketball at Manhattan, and the Jaspers are 20-18 all-time in their opening game.
