If anyone thinks Nelson wrote the email himself, or reaching out was his idea, you're nuts.
Written by someone in athletic development, and Nelson was told to send it.
He may have not even read what "he" sent.

He did not lie as townsell is, in fact, the only graduating player we lost.
If he insisted on sending out an email now (I also got one from baseball) he should have also said something along the lines of " it's unfortunate that a number of our players have "entered the transfer portal " but while we wish them the best we are hard at work seeking replacements and hope to have good news to report on that soon."

1. Don't lose any of the 7 that could easily leave/not come (Gates and Dorsey I think are safe). 2. Find two more transfers as good as Octave appears to be to make up for the losses. Just Octave doesn't do it. Or talk one guy into staying after all. 3. Recruit another couple freshmen and do a better job of vetting who wants to be here versus just passing by.
Then send your email out.

Correct and that vision for the college is fever dream and the vision of the NCAA simply does not consider the small minority of small D1 schools who can do well in a select sport or sports. A school should be able to field whatever teams at whatever level they want to field them based on more reasonable requirements. It’s time for a change. Also I don’t think the large schools give a crap about what the smalls are doing. I think the general consensus among member institutions is a school should be in a specific division. If you want to be a division 1 school, be a division 1 school. If schools were to be allowed to place teams where ever they wanted, everybody would be D-I in basketball to get a piece of the March Madness pie without devoting any resources to other sports To clarify, schools should be able to field as many teams as they want in whatever division they want, or course with all teams being in the same division. Sorry wasn’t clear. And also this email is a joke. What a stupid time for such a thing.

You guys love to complain when you don't hear from Nelson, then dissect every word and complain when you do hear from him, this time in a fundraising email where he is trying to put a positive spin on the program. What the hell do you want him to say in this email? Do you think he is going to put in writing an outline of areas where he has come up short in his job? Do you guys list out your failings and email them out to your company or post on LinkedIn for anyone to read? I get that he's in a "public role" but it takes a situation with a hell of a lot more job security than Nelson has to be publicly calling himself out. What do I want him to say in the email?
This isn't that hard. He could say: "Since the season ended, some guys have elected to avail themselves of the transfer portal, which unfortunately is very common in this era. But we've got Gerrale Gates returning, one exciting freshman already committed, and the transfer portal is a two-way street. My staff is working hard to identify a few more guys who would fit our philosophy"....
What he did instead is outright gaslighting.

But your overall point is valid.

Ok, a totally reasonable blurb. My next question would be: what does it matter? As evidenced by the first transfer addition yesterday, he and his staff clearly are working on bringing guys in, and isn’t that action (versus inaction by past staffs) more important than writing it in a throwaway email?

That “throwaway email” was asking for money. Maybe he or whoever hit the send button wanted it to be read, not thrown away.

Earn the donations. Don't come and ask for cash after the program flopped again, we've shown we can get in a couple talented guys (league rookie of the year) but can't keep them. Botch, fail, fumble... we all do it. But you've got some nerve trying to spin excuses or be less than crystal clear transparent when you ask for money. You're going to get a ton of angry DELETES and even angry emails to your boss, as evidenced by this thread. Instead, get your ass to work in fixing the program and plugging the giant hole in the bottom of the boat and then your requests for help will be met with more empathy and success in raising funds. "God helps those who help themselves." We're not throwing money into a burning house until the fire is put out.

Nice analogy WCHC. I can picture the bills fluttering in to the flames to be burned up and gone. However, that same money could also be used to get a good "fire extinguisher"...one that can play defense.

Do you really think this was Nelson's idea to send out an email asking for money right now? I also got an email from the Women's coach earlier this week, and I'm sure all other coaches are being "forced" to send out the same email.

A possible timeline is Development requests the email and offers general guidelines including examples of past appeals. Nelson composes, submits to development for editing/approval then Nelson approves the updates and sends to the AD who approves and sends to legal for sign off. During this time the bombs may have dropped regarding transfers but nobody was interested in restarting the approval process, so send was hit.

A good legal team would prevent the send button from being hit. They’d wait for a better time, then send the letter for one more lap around the office for further revisions, then send it. Layered levels of idiocy. At some point the coach signed off and should not have.

An email announcing each new transfer in is more positive than trying to take a victory lap for last year. My math says as a group the transfers in for next season across D-1 will be more talented than the transfers out. HC still has a challenge, but we should be able to attract talented players. That should be the forward looking focus of the MBB program this off season.

In composite I can understand that the transfers in will be better than the transfers out. 1700 players transfer out and the best 1400 get picked up by another team. However what is true in the composite will certainly not be true for every single team.

I would not want either, but I would still send my grandkids to Holy Cross. I was thinking of the current status of mbb, certainly not the college. A good reminder of all Holy Cross has to offer to any student athlete.

Back in the day, one of my cross country runners used his ability to get into UConn (when they had a strict limit on out of state students - early 1970s). He left the team after his frosh year but stayed to graduate from UConn, getting the degree he wanted all along. A degree from Holy Cross is nothing to sneeze at, even if the hoop team is struggling right now.

Very embarrassing the two graphics embedded in that email as there were only 43 total donors and $35,500 raised for the program. Interest isn't dwindling. It's becoming non-existent. Anyone want to guess how many of these 43 are former players? My guess is “ next to none.”

I have never really thought about what UConn is noted for academically. What was his degree in?

This is all so ridiculous....Nelson needs to be fired tomorrow....if we retain him for 22-23, you know we basically don't care about men's hoop anymore as an institution.
