I also wondered if PP is staying at his vacation home in Kelley Square this week to be so close to campus.🙂

I also wondered if PP is staying at his vacation home in Kelley Square this week to be so close to campus.🙂 Nah. The drone home base is the Pakachoag Golf Course. Fly up Pakachoag St. in stealth mode! I'm there before the Jebbie's realize it. I actually watched the Planning Board meeting last night. Clark University won approval for a new building which will house Becker's video game design program, which Clark took over. The Planning Board also approved the two new residence halls, highly complimentary of the design. One of the Planning Board members lives very close to College St., probably nearer to the Auburn line, so very aware of HC's land-buying spree. Earlier, I had watched a replay of the Conservation Commission public hearing, HC said construction would start after commencement.

Pakachoag Golf Course is the site where Robert Goddard fired off his first rockets in 1926. A National Historic Landmark memorial marks the spot there.

Any neighbors complain? (I know that given the buying spree that many of the abbuters are the college itself.) Good Morning: There were no public comments at the hearing, neither in person or on-line. The College held a neighborhood meeting prior to the public hearing to answer any concerns. The only concerns at that meeting were around potential parking issues, which have been addressed.

PP, Will they need to cut down all those mature pines that line the border between HC and the lots on City View?

Took my drone out the other day for an overhead view of the Upper Campus. shows how much of the upper campus is parking lot.... cries out for a parking garage for green spaces?

Just what I have been thinking--but isn't there an issue with massive ledge underlying the parking lots? Without that I'd envision a multi-story lot with several floors below grade

Why not try to purchase the golf course? Golf is life.

Why not try to purchase the golf course? Golf is life. The response of the town of Auburn who owns the course would be "To the Moon Alice."

The letter was not read, nor did the board chair or board staff ask a question that would seem to have raised a point made by an abutter, except there was a brief reference to utility poles, and moving them or removing them entirely.

PP, Will they need to cut down all those mature pines that line the border between HC and the lots on City View? I believe most, if not all, of the trees that marked the old boundary between the rear yards of the City View properties and the College's property are being cut down. Some new trees will be planted. The west side of the site, fronting College St., will have a short row of new evergreens, a fir tree that grows at high altitudes on the West Coast, and in nature, can reach a height of 100+ feet.

Re: parking. I believe by city ordinance? the college is required to provide 1,420 parking spaces. The city has a formula based on number of classrooms, number of beds, etc. The College presently is about 350 spaces to the good. These new residence halls requires only seven new spaces, four new spaces will be provided, the surplus will drop to 347.
When I mentioned abutter up-thread, the city required the College to notify 373 abutters about this project, so a comment letter from an abutter might have been written by an abutter who lived some distance from the project site.

Purchasing lots or constructing a garage on the other side of 290 could open up even more room.

Can't speak with any authority about this, but i believe the parking spaces must be 'permanent' spaces located on the contiguous campus. The existing house lots on City View St that will be the site for the new residence halls are not presently part of the contiguous campus, but will become so once built upon.. And it could be that a lot built on the west side of College St could be construed as being part of the contiguous campus, while a lot sited on an abandoned municipal course in another community would not.

I'm picturing the jaunt from the other side of 290 up the hill in the winter. Not too workable and more arduous as you get older.

The weekend before last, City View was closed off at McCarthy Lane extended, i.e., by the Jesuit residence. Demolition permits for four houses on City View were issued the first week in June. The Jo webcam reveals this morning the installation of sediment control fencing along the south side of the Upper Campus Rd (Mahoney Dr.) next to The Jo. The fencing will give you an idea of the horizontal scale of this project.

From reviewing the Jo Webcam this morning, the houses have been demolished and the trees on the property have been cut. One will be able to review construction progress from the Jo Cam.

Exactly the opposite evolution of James Madison U; where I 81 splits the campus nearly 50-50.

Is it true that there will be a total of 148 beds in these new buildings? About that number. These are mostly eight-person or four-person suites.

I've had a number of large trees cut down on my property about as big as those. I am REALLY impressed with this piece of equipment that grips/holds/cuts and moves all in one. [I'd really keep my distance from that saw! ]

They waited until the student tree huggers were away for the summer. I hope HC actually plants replacement trees instead of just buying carbon credits.
