"If you have two QBs, you have none." I have heard that a number of times. The problem is that for HC, at least, it is wrong. HC has won three straight championships with 2 QBs getting playing time in. IIRC, every game. *League titles. Not D1 titles. I don't think we've lost because of QB play. I am nitpicking. But how far can we go? After three PL 'ships, I'm getting greedy. I'm getting aspirations. This is an unusual feeling for any HC alum for many decades. I will go lie down now.

You have no native immunity for these unrecognizable symptoms. Sluka himself doesn't appear to be injury prone but his style of play is. So having an alternate with FCS starter level talent is very fortuitous.

I agree in the games won QB play by Sluka and Siderman were strong. However the 3 games we lost Merrimack, Harvard and Villanova both QB's did not play well. 49/101 passing 48.5%, 2 TD's and 5 INTS. In the wins combined 156/241 passing 64.7% 17 TD's and 4 INT's. Clearly the biggest opportunity is to learn from those losses and improve with turnovers and be more efficient. Smith will figure it out as he has a talented roster that can compete for the FCS title this year. Kick off will be here before we know it! Have a great 4th everyone!

So having an alternate with FCS starter level talent is very fortuitous. Agreed. If anything, you need a 2nd QB to take at least a handful snaps most games simply to give him a breather. Sluka takes no prisoners when he runs the ball. Not only is he fast and shifty, he likes to run through contact, twist and turn, drag the pile, etc. And of course, when we have game under control you want to minimize his exposure to injuries. Freak plays happen, whether your injury prone or not.

It is the reality of those "freak plays" that can cause fans to lose sleep.

. . . . . and the parents of the players. The players, of course, think they are invulnerable.

Lions have Hard Knocks this year. Be interesting to see if Kalif is featured at all. Trailer here: Unfortunately, Kalif went from being a huge camp story every year through 2021 to an afterthought in this Lions camp. Conventional wisdom seems to be he’s going to make the team, return punts and get a few snaps on offense as a #5/6 receiver. Only way he gets a decent role on Hard Knocks is if they make a storyline out of the receiving room which has an interesting mix of guys with different histories in the league and is now viewed much more positively after being viewed as weakest in the league last year. They also seem to spend a lot of time after practice as a group with Amon-Ra and Kalif leading the way.

In a stock up/stock down column on the Lions from USA Today, they said UDFA WR Kalil Pimpleton a real chance to win the punt return job. That did not make me happy.
Pimpleton is the smallest player on the field, but the undrafted rookie WR from Central Michigan is coming up big in every practice.
Pimpleton has shown soft hands, but where he’s really stood out is with his exceptional acceleration and agility with the ball in his hands. He uses his small stature to his advantage, very difficult to corral after the catch. The UDFA looks to have a real chance to win the punt return job.

I think the author (or you) meant Kilil Pimpleton another WR on the Lions Roster who is 5'9" and 172 lbs, a smidge taller and lighter than Kalif.
Yes concern, but he does have to field punts under live fire before I'd get too concerned.

It’s Kalil, which I knew. Either I’m so used to typing Kalif that my fingers did it or my phone has seen me type Kalif enough times that it autocorrected Kalil to Kalif. As I just typed this, I realized that my phone autocorrects to Kalif.

He was targeted 4 times, 2 catches for 52 yards, the yards leading the team, with the above a long of 45

During the broadcast of last night’s Lions-Falcons game, the announcers began pronouncing Kalif’s name as KAHL-eef rather than Kuh-LEAF. At first I thought it was their collective unfamiliarity with Kalif but they explained that they had spoken with Kalif and he had asked them to use the first/new pronunciation.
I did not see Kalif return a punt during the game but was not watching every play. Kalil Pimpleton and Maurice Alexander were the punt returners that I saw and neither had a significant return when I was watching (either fair caught the ball or let it be downed by the punting team).

USA Today roster projection after 1 preseason game.
Wide receiver (6)
In: Amon-Ra St. Brown, Josh Reynolds, DJ Chark, Kalif Raymond, Trinity Benson, Tom Kennedy
Out: Quintez Cephus, Kalil Pimpleton, Josh Johnson, Maurice Alexander
NFI: Jameson Williams
There’s little doubt that Dan Campbell and his staff would keep all of these players on the roster if they could.
Against Atlanta, Tom Kennedy was both Boyle and Blough’s go-to guy and racked up eight receptions for 104 yards in the process. Simply being healthy and available gives him priority over Quintez Cephus, who did not play in Friday’s preseason game.
Trinity Benson has done just enough to warrant a spot on the 53-man roster. He seems to have the edge over Igwebuike in the aforementioned kick return completion and had an impressive 24-yard catch against Atlanta.

Pro Football Focus grades for Lions WRs in their first preseason game:
Wide receivers
Top score: Amon-Ra St. Brown (88.9) Low score: Trinity Benson (51.6)
St. Brown picked up right where he left off last season, making a couple of big catches on Detroit’s opening drive and earning the top receiving grade among pass-catchers.
The big story from Friday, however, was the receiving performance of Tom Kennedy. Eight catches for 104 yards and an aDoT of 16.1 helped Kennedy earn the second-best grade among receivers and throw his hat into the ring for a spot on the 53-man roster. On the flip side of that conversation, Benson played a lot of snaps that included repping as the top kick returner, but a lackluster receiving performance couldn’t have helped his chances of making the roster.
Outside of St. Brown and Kennedy, only one Lions receiver earned a grade higher than 55.5: Kalif Raymond with an offense grade of 67.8 and a receiving grade of 69.3.

He has also made friends with backup QB David Blough as he had 2 catches for 10 yards on 3 targets on the opening drive. One of the catches was a 3rd down conversion. The incompletion was on a third down in Colts territory right before a field goal. Didn’t see what happened. 3-0 Lions.
