New playing fields on top of the hill are a Kit priority. These will be for nine sports: M/W lacrosse; M/W soccer; M/W outdoor track & field; softball; field hockey; football practice. The college is proceeding with the plan originally developed during MB's tenure. Which is: a.) new artificial turf surface for both soccer and lacrosse, with expanded seating at Smith Field to 3,000 and improved press box. b.) moving softball from bottom of the hill to top of the hill, with artificial surface. c.) new surface for field hockey field and running track (construction now underway, to be completed by September, cost $3 million) d.) replace artificial surface at Fr. K. field. e.) relocate venues for some field events for track and field f.) new spectator amenities. Current cost estimate is $16-18 million. (This apparently does not include the $3 million being spent on the field hockey field and outdoor running track.) Is an artificial turf surface necessary for the soccer stadium? It seems to have performed well with natural grass.

It is because the soccer field will also be the lacrosse field, and one practice field (and perhaps two) for soccer will be sacrificed for the new softball field and moving the venues of some of the field events for track and field. The image below is of BC's Astroturf field, used for soccer and lacrosse, and which may have inspired Marcus Blossom to mirror it on Mt. St. James.

Is Holy Cross the only school without a turf option for soccer?

Harvard has played soccer on turf for almost a decade. Ohiri Field no longer their home field.

More justification for rebuilding/upgrading Smith Stadium if you are going to use it for 4 teams and not 2.
Lacrosse starts playing games so early in the calendar year it's not possible to have 100% grass.
