Of greater need are a point guard and a big A 6'10" kid from UB just hit the portal. He was offered by 3 PL schools and has 3 years of eligibility left. He redshirted in '19-'20 and the next year didn't count. He had over 20 offers coming out of hs. His name is David Skogman. Looks like a stretch 4 24 mpg Stats ubbulls.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/david-skogman/5947

Ken pomeroy has him at #4 in division 1 in effective field goal percentage. He shot .744 on his twos and over .400 on his threes
129 offensive rating is stratospheric

Joe looks like a nice player. I wish him all the luck.
However, if this means that Nelson is definitely coming back, I frankly am sick to my stomach.

Presume old friends NP and JS spoke positively to him about Holy Cross. Neither of which have any first hand knowledge of what a disastah Nelson is.

Agree 100%. Among the various reasons for hitting the portal he could fit into the “moving up after playing well” category

Can't believe some of the stuff I'm reading here. Such as ? Such as all the hyperventilating and speculating about BN's job. Have no idea why anyone thinks that is even at issue at this point. There has been no indication whatsoever that a change is on the table.

There has been no indication whatsoever that a change is on the table. I think it’s mostly because we’ve been awful for three years and 4 of his recruits have decided to leave in the last couple of weeks.

Welcome to HC, Joseph!
I have to give CBN and staff credit - I did not think they could bring in someone of Octave's caliber at this point in time. It's nice that Scott/Pine also apparently gave some positive feedback about HC the school to the kid; good to see. Now, the staff needs to repeat this 3-4 times, starting with a quality point guard. This doesn't alleviate concerns about the in game coaching, but if it still doesn't work out, at least there might be a better roster in place for the next guy. We'll see.
Based on where he came from, guessing that Octave is well schooled in passing and moving without the ball.....might need some work at the other end.
Don't know if one writer was trying to be funny, but he wrote that "Octave went out on a high note" with 21 points and 10 rebounds in his final game (against Utah State in the MVC tourny).

What’s the game plan? Come to HC, get minutes, lose games, and the hit the portal again?
I’m about done following this and I’m sad Bob C and other HC greats are alive to see this. HC for so long has tried to rise above the scum of college athletics but finds itself smack in the middle of this transferitis garbage.

I wishI had a dollar for every time this kid has heard something like this. Maybe there is an accent on the e, can’t remember if it is grav or egu , to get people away from the musical angle. However he pronounces it, here is to hoping he turns out to be a keeper.

Re: pronunciation. Did you know that Jim Larranaga's name was "Anglicized"? There should be a tilde over the "n" and the correct pronunciation is. Larr-an-yahga. His grandfather was Cuban.

His fouls drawn per 40 minutes of 4.3 would have been second to Gates on HC team so he’s not bad at getting to the line but had less success making his free throws Of AF players with 200+ minutes, JO had the third-highest FTR and defensive rebounding%, and led the team in efficiency and usage % - all indicators that he was very involved at both ends and getting a lot of touches (only Gates had higher PER and USG rates for HC, btw).
Worth noting that Air Force ranked 346th in FTA/G, and dead last in FGA/G, so the typical PO aversion to contact and Scott's slower-than-molasses offensive pace limited his ability to get to the line.

Expect incoming transfers to be more talented than outgoing transfers who were recruited when there were only four classes of players chasing four years of scholarships. That could be the dirty little secret of this whole portal phenomen. That this year the teams that exchange more players improve the most. For this to be true, expect stories of players like Lowder and Wade who are on the outside looking in at D-1 scholarship positions. I personally hope our recently departed get scholarship slots, but it will be interesting to observe what happens.

On the surface, Octave looks like a good fit & immediate contributor. 2 years in a row Nelson bags a transfer out of the Mountain West. Given the defections, we need more of this...please. Despite the train wreck of the last decade, the transfer portal offers an opportunity to expedite a quicker turnaround. While Nelson may have a vote of no confidence on this board, it appears he's the captain of the ship for now. Let's hope a few more transfers come through the door vs under developed freshmen. We need results.

Would any of the players who (whom?) have transferred out be considered as talented and productive as Gates? One non-expert's opinion: Among the players who transferred out in recent years (setting aside AB who had to transfer) I'd say Joe Pridgen was as talented and productive as Gerrale Gates. Mitch Hahn was also pretty good. Among the players currently in the portal, Kyrell Luc is very talented and very high potential-there's no telling what he will be able to accomplish in the next three years as he adds maturity and experience and if he gets coaching that will help him develop. In my opinion, he is a huge loss if he goes.

Nfedo, one of St. Peter's key players, wanted to leave last year, entered the transfer portal, but never found that for which he was looking (channeling U2), and returned to St. Peter's. He got lucky when a planned transfer backed out and a scholarship opened up. So he was basically rerecruited. Point being, it is not necessarily irrevocable if a kid enters the transfer portal.

Ndefo. Is a rare exception. The vast majority who go in the portal, eventually leave, even if it takes months. See Ryan Wade.

Probably true. What if a kid tells a coach that he'd like to play in a tougher environment but would stay if nothing materializes and the coach gives him a month or so to test the waters.
