Stonehill College announced today they are jumping from D-II to D-I. The become the third Massachusetts school from the Northeast 10 to make that jump in the last 10 years. UMass Lowell and Merrimack are the other two

Time to resume the basketball series and bulk up our record. I went to at least one game vs Stonehill at the Worcester Auditorium. Former Interim AD Sullivan could have stayed at Stonehill and become a D-1 AD without leaving his desk.
That could be an interesting conversation at any D-2 school that moves up, between not only the AD and his/her boss, the President of the Institution, but also between the AD and every employee in the Athletic Dept.
"Boss, I'd like a raise due to my increased responsibilities."
"Your responsibility isn't increasing. You will be doing the same job in the same office with the same people."
"Yeah but Boss, we're D-1"
"But your job isn't changing."
Ad infinitum.

Look for Bentley to soon follow. Surprised they haven't vis-a-vis Merrimack and Stonehill. UML had the arena and the sometimes backing of the Commonwealth going for it. |

Should we be concerned that Lowell, Stonehill, Merrimack, et al are soon to pass by HC? Bryant already has. We certainly should be but the bigger question is does it mean anything to the PTB on the Hill, both the fact it is happening and the concern of alumni and fans. |

To big fan's point above, TPTB probably loves this. More small, regional schools just short drives away to fill our non-conference schedules. |

Plus an already "big time" athletics presence as a major DI hockey program. UMass-Lowell did drop football a few years before moving up. |

Are we getting closer to a basketball D1A-1AA split? I mean, at this rate they'll be 400 D1 basketball schools before the decade is over. There will probably be some low D-1 conferences with 20+ teams. I understand that $$ talks, and the prestige, and all that, but at what cost? TPTB sure are not going to allow for the creation of new lower level conferences to create additional auto bids.

Don't know if a St. Peter's situation (team from obscure league comes out of nowhere and wins 2/3 games) makes the status quo (or adding a couple more teams) more etched in stone or ready to be modified.

TPTB sure are not going to allow for the creation of new lower level conferences to create additional auto bids.If additional conferences are created, you'll soon see the NCAA expanded to 72 teams. The slow and steady demise of the NIT may go hand-in-hand with this change. All these new low-DI additions are happening ultimately BECAUSE of what's happening at the top. So really the TPTB are forcing this to happen. As the big conferences expand, a domino effect is created. And the small conferences have to get even bigger due to the presence of less available OOC games in M/W Basketball. |

As long as I can remember and up until 10 years ago, there were six D-I schools in MA. With Stonehill, that number becomes nine. Fifty percent increase in a decade

Fifty percent increase in a decade 1) BC => ACC 2) UMass => A-10 3) Harvard => IVY 4) Holy Cross => Patriot 5) Boston U. => Patriot 6) Northeastern => CAA 7) UMASS-Lowell => America East 8) Merrimack => NEC 9) Stonehill => NEC Yep, the last three all moved up in the last five years so we were indeed at 6 for about 40 years. Probably dating back to the DIA/IAA split. I believe UMASS and Northeastern were DII before that, at least in football. Maybe they were DI for basketball for a time before that. With 8 teams we could have had a nice, clean "State Tournament" at TD Garden to start the season. Thanks for ruining NY Crusade's "idea that will never happen anyway" by joining DI, Stonehill. |
