Probably going to ramble a bit, but - seeing Joe's comment on the other thread about AAU got me wondering. When did things start to go crazy in the AAU world (and prep schools too)?
Thinking back to my younger days here in Central Mass, it seemed like another world from what I can recall. In high school in the 70's, I don't have any recollection of AAU basketball at all, and prep school seemed to be pretty much a post grad deal. Kids in our area played on summer high school leagues. Maybe the elites did play on traveling teams, but never heard any buzz about it.
In the 80s and into the early 90s, I got my summer hoops fix from the Bay State Games (they still exist?) and the Boston Shootout. The Bay State Games were pretty popular; I would watch a lot of the rising high school senior division games (where I once saw this kid sitting on the end of the West team bench dribbling a ball around his chair endlessly while the game was going on. His name was Derek Kellogg); also saw many local college guys in the Men's division. One year the Central team included Mashburn, Breslin, Powell, Walker, and Ted Bettencourt. I specifically remember Mashburn getting in a scuffle over a loose ball with BC's David Hinton - that was fun. And of course, the Shootout was great as well.
So when did everything turn, and why?
Another memory just popped in my head: anyone else remember that season ending all star game(s) that would be played each year at the Hart (put on by the New England Coaches Association?)? I think there was a D1-D2 game, and maybe a D-3 game too. Think that ran from sometime in the 90's into the early Willard era. I guess that's gone the way of the Edsel too.

Dave - probably too much reality for a Tuesday night.

Getting my first look at the AAU world this spring. Definitely a lot of parents with big dreams out there starting when their kids are very young (4th and 5th grade). I suspect it doesn’t work out as hoped for most.

Thought I would copy my thoughts here again to drown out the crickets:
They learn this in AAU, by public high school coaches who do favors for some kids, and by private high school coaches who will recruit positions away right under a player’s feet the first chance they get. At the same time some coaches don’t recognize talent all that well and some coaches concede to the squeaky wheel parents and flashy players. The players therefore are not totally to blame for thinking that if they don’t advocate for themselves and think of themselves first, they will simply not get to play basketball in game situations. Given the sacrifices some of these players make, they feel like they’ve earned that chance and are good enough to be on the floor. Some of these players are right and some are wrong, but not all players are the infantile, delusional jerks some of us make them out to be, although some of them are. Austin Butler is a good example of what every modern player should strive to be like, but not everyone can be that guy, and not all the Austins of the world get their due playing time, and even good guys and gals may look for a chance somewhere else. The days of players sitting humbly on the bench and bowing down in blind deference to dictatorial coaches is over, for better AND perhaps mostly for worse.
One other thing - how about the really big time AAU programs paying kids to play for them? When is that shoe going to drop?
Welcome to the madness, HC92.

The only thing to come out of AAU is the development of obnoxious parents.
Not all but many.

My favorite "obnoxious parent" story goes back to my teaching at a NJ high school. A parent actually came into the coaches room after a game to demand that his son start pitching more often. We actually had to restrain him. If he had attacked our coach/athletic director, Matty Certosimo, could have destroyed him. He said that not starting enough games in high school would hurt his son's chances for a full scholarship and to play major league ball. (PS: His son was a great kid and a fair athlete, but never would get any scholarship offers and certainly was not pro material...something that sadly his father could not see.)
