Excerpts from a 'letter' from Chesney.
This year, the spring game pitted the offense against the defense and, when the final score was tallied, the offense came away with the victory. At the end of this month, the offense will be served our “Winner Dinner” by the defense. Steaks for the offense and hot dogs for the defense. It will be a great day.
I would also like to thank Artie Grutt ’02, Larry Doyle ’83, P21,12,11, Brian Cullinan ’03, and Amy Murphy, director of the Center for Career Development at Holy Cross, for hosting our 90-wide strategic plan meeting last month. As you are all aware, the 90-wide mentorship program is peerless and this was the third meeting of its kind this past year alone. The commitment from our 90-wide mentors to our team is extremely appreciated and important, and we cannot thank you all enough for continuing to make the 90-wide “best in class.”
In late January, we launched our Fueling The Momentum campaign. It is off to an impressive start, but there is still much work to be done. On Friday, May 20, we will have our Crusader Together: Athletics Day of Giving. If you have not yet made a gift in support of your Crusaders, this would be the perfect time to do so. We need your help to keep our football team at the top of the Holy Cross athletics fundraising rankings!
Recently, we introduced the newest members of our coaching staff, and I could not be more pleased with how this group came together. Promoting fellow Crusader Chris Smith ’09 and reintroducing former Crusader Anthony DiMichele ’11 brings me great pride because they both certainly understand what it takes to be a great Crusader. You can read more about our staff promotions and additions here. We also promoted Nick Della Jacono and Mike Cordova into their own position rooms and brought back Kyle Barnes, who coached at Holy Cross in 2018 and played at Assumption University. The final two additions are Rich Gunnell who joins us from Boston College and Dean Kennedy who joins us from the University of Florida. I know this staff will make you proud.
Spring ball was a huge success and, most importantly, we came away with very little injury, which bodes well for our future. Fifteen fifth-year players decided to stay, which provides great experience for our team and is needed for the next phase of this mission. Winning four in a row is going to be very challenging but, with a great staff and a veteran team, we believe that we can accomplish this feat.
Recruiting is going very well, and we welcomed over 700 high school juniors to campus over the past month. This is a huge difference from last year, given that no recruits were permitted on campus during last year’s recruiting cycle. Our summer will be filled with more visits and camps, and we will continue to present why “Holy Cross is the greatest place to play college football in the country!”
We are excited to get back to hosting summer clinics as well as hosting our own team here on campus this summer. As you are all aware, employment opportunities to help offset the cost of summer classes and housing are needed. If you have any leads or any opportunities within your own companies, please share that information with our director of operations Jordan Smith at jtsmith@holycross.edu as soon as possible.
