With the renovated and expanded Smith Stadium, Holy Cross will be installing artificial turf for both lacrosse and soccer. Four teams will share the same surface. I suspect the playing surface will be the latest version of what BC installed eight years ago. bceagles.com/facilities/newton-campus-lacrosse-soccer-field/4^^^ with photos.

That triggers a humorous conversation I had with the mother and grandmother of a soccer player at the last game. We were all coming back from halftime from the Hart Center. The ladies said, "what this place (soccer stadium) needs is a ladies room! We had to go into the Hart Center and the ladies room was filled with the Field Hockey team." Asked them if they knew they had restrooms on the 2nd floor (they don't go to basketball or hockey games). They said they knew but the doors up to the second floor were locked. So, being me I said "I am sure if you would like to donate $3-$4 million that the College would be happy to install restrooms at the soccer stadium." They knew me well enough by then to know it was a joke but semi-serious because their daughter was a senior and her last game going to be played there.

The comment was made long before 2021 to the AD who constructed both Smith and Fr. K regarding the playing Lax competition at Smith instead of Fr. K. Approximately a decade before 2021. Shortly after Fr. K was constructed.
The Men’s Soccer Coach, when Smith was constructed wanted a grass field, to lessen possible injuries. Lax really cannot be played on grass in New England in February and March.

I'll stipulate to that, as they say on the Court Dramas, but this incarnation looks gleaming new in the photo and has to provide a recruiting edge over schools that share their FH field. there are very few D1 teams in the country where field hockey shares a field in-season. Some may share it with a spring sport, usually women’s lacrosse, but that really should not be an issue at all. And very unlikely to affect recruiting. Also if women’s lacrosse does not share a field with field hockey, then men’s lacrosse and women’s lacrosse in most cases must share a field during the same season – which is significantly worse. The field looks awesome in the photo. I was comparing it in my mind to the Fordham multi sport field in the rain during the HC-Fordham FB game last year, which looked as my Irish relatives used to say "strictly from hunger." That has to help Holy Cross recruiting I would think.

Can you really play another sport well and safely on that type of surface? Seems like it's meant for field hockey and field hockey only. Unless street hockey becomes an officially recognized NCAA sport!
Soccer/lacrosse will have a completely different look. When is that scheduled to be done?

Holy Cross for years played mens and womens lax on it too until they finally came to their senses. I don't think there are any lacrosse teams in the country that play on that anymore.

This morning before heading down to Fitton, I walked several laps on the new track and on the turf for field hockey.
The track has incredible spring in its surface and the field hockey turf has high degree of resilience. Both surfaces are very soft to walk and run. It is softer than natural grass. It is a beautiful venue with the combination of green, purple, light and dark gray. An outstanding job was done in the installation.
The new surface should reduce injuries, as the padding is thicker than what is found in a bedroom or living room. Clearly it is for field hockey only.
The upgrade for soccer/lax will occur once the funding is in place for the new complex for it, plus softball. Hopefully it will be completed within the next half decade with other campus improvements in the queue that may be priority according the new Sasaki master plan. HC has two building construction projects underway.

Ah...Maryland does in Women I know that because they are doing a big fundraising campaign for their field hockey/lax field. At least two of the seven PL field hockey programs have fields that are also used by women's lacrosse: American and Bucknell (not sure about Colgate), Bucknell's facility is very nice, AU not so much. A couple others that I know are UConn and Georgetown. There are no doubt others. There are also a number of schools who play FH on the same field as soccer or football, which obviously is not good at all.

UConn is hosting Big East Women's Lax at the Soccer Stadium this school year....Last year, they played all their outdoor home games at the Soccer Stadium which is field turf. (They had a game held in the football indoor facility).

HC has two building construction projects underway. Park Smith's proceeds from the auction of the Chateau d'Yquem were not used to construct The Jo. I do not know whether the proceeds were used for the new strength and conditioning complex at the Luth, or if naming rights were simply carried over from the original facility, which the smiths had funded. If the latter is true, then HC should have in its cash assets the d'Yquem (the Y is silent for the non-connoisseurs of very expensive vin) auction proceeds, which i would guess might cover half the projected cost of the additional top of the Hill facilities. And specifically, should be sufficient for the renovated and expanded Smith soccer stadium. If anyone attended the President's Council dinner last night, there may be an update or two.

If it not for the weather in Worcester in February and March, Lacrosse would be played at Smith on grass like UVA. A former men’s soccer coach in 2003 insisted on a natural grass at Smith to conform with FIFA standards. Fr.K was originally intended as the practice field for football, as Hart Turf was the venue for Lax.
The Smith upgrade to accommodate four teams, M/W Soccer and Lacrosse is in detail planning for implementing along with a new softball complex including ancillary facilities. The completion will probably occur in the next half decade, before the soccer stadium at UNH. The first men’s lacrosse game in the upgraded Smith Stadium will be with UNH……. Oh wait, my mistake, UNH does not have men’s lacrosse. It will have to be UVM.

Keeping up the Joneses in college athletic facilities is a money pit. It's become an arms race and colleges are afraid to unilaterally disarm, preferring a doctrine of mutually assured overspending.
It is now almost impossible to have a cost efficient but safe utilitarian field serving multiple sports for the least expense possible to lower tuition costs.

I know it isn't on my spring schedule to shoot. I don't know why you talk about a soccer practice field at UNH so much when the mens team just won the America East regular season title and the womens team just won the postseason bid. Both of them play in the big stadium and there is no way the men are leaving the football stadium.
