Excellent Commencement Address by Dr. Verghese. Just listened and so pleased he talked about my teammate/his boss, Bob Harrington '82 an extraordinary physician, scientist and educator and a good guy.

I will never get over seeing pictures of commencement in the DCU Center.
Just a pathetic level of laziness from TPTB.

I attended the graduation as my daughter was in the class of 2022. The DCU setting was as pedestrian and uninspiring as expected. The weather was good on Friday morning and the event could have been held at Fitton. Most families drove back to campus for post graduation photos. I believe those who graduate from Holy Cross should graduate AT Holy Cross. My hope is this will be the last graduation at the DCU. The baccalaureate mass was held on Thursday afternoon at Fitton, flawlessly. No fatalities or casualties at Fitton that I am aware of. All the seating and staging were already set up at Fitton for a Friday graduation, yet somehow we had to have it at the DCU. So disappointing.

DCU is Dark. Dreary. Drab. Are there any indoor places on campus which are large enough to hold commencement?

Yes. WE have an entire football field under a roof, with over flow space for 3000+ in the basketball arena and another 1000 in the hockey arena. Here's a picture of the Baccalaureate Mass on Thursday on Fitton, to give you an idea how much space a football field would have to add even more guests, because I'm sure not every guest for the ceremony is at Mass. But it give you an idea of what might be done inside.

So, Vince Rougeau can't say the baccalaureate Mass? I KNEW there was a downside to having a non-Jesuit president!
On a more serious note, I have often been curious as to how many non-Catholic graduates and their families attend the Mass. 90%? 75%? 50%? 25%? 10%? Less? And how does that compare to the Mass when school opens?

Even if you felt like the only rain option is the DCU, couldn’t we just do whatever it is we do today to rent and set up the facility as a backup? Sure, we’d be wasting a fair amount of time and money but would it cost us more than we’re paying today? We’re wasting the same amount of money today to have the ceremony in a crappy setting rather than the beautiful on-campus stadium.

We’re wasting the same about of money today to have the ceremony in a crappy setting rather than the beautiful on-campus stadium. The graduating class has contributed over $200M in tuition & fees — I think the College can afford to set up two separate spaces to send everyone out on the best possible note. I believe the answer around here has been that it’s easier for the staff/faculty responsible for commencement at the DCU Center — it would be easier for me to do the absolute bare minimum at my job too, but that doesn’t make it right.

I graduated at Fitton in 1969 on a beautiful, sunny day. My daughter, on the other hand, had hers moved to the Hart Center in 2004 at the last moment because of the weather. It was dissapointing not to be able to accommodate all of our family, and the setting was cramped and hot. I that there are likely other reasons for selecting the DCU that our leadership has considered, such as supportive community relations and exposure of our visitors to the downtown businesses that are well received by our neigbors. Might this give HC the inside track on using the DCU for certain sports events (think BE Mens Hockey) or other things?

I doubt we gain anything with the City or the DCU center by holding graduation there. The college moved it there for "2 years" while the Luth was under construction and there was not an indoor alternative or adequate parking.
Like I said we have an advantage over many other schools as our on campus facilities can accommodate both an indoor an and outdoor graduation. Many schools hold their commencement rain or shine (Fordham, BC, essentially all of the Ivies, ....) outdoors. BC's website indicated they may cancel their University Ceremony in Alumni stadium in the event of severe weather (tornados, lightning, etc). Many schools also limit tickets with their outdoor locations.
It's silly NOT to hold it on campus and move it a site that has almost no meaning or connection to the college and any of the graduates when you are able to host it on campus.

It's not like the DCU is a beautiful historic venue like Mechanics Hall, which would would be too small for graduation. The 3000 grandstand seats plus folding chairs on the lawn at the baseball field would give older attendees a chance to have a chair back and it must be more handicapped accessible than the football stadium as it is much newer.

You underestimate Phreek 😊 You do so at your peril. About 500 graduates at the Baccalaureate. Some faculty, but not all. Can't see the stands, but less than a thousand parents/guests on the field. My count of the Jesuits is nine, including Fr. Boroughs (identified from the back), assuming three concelebrants. Fewer and fewer. The College seems to be assigning great weight to the post-commencement reception at the DCU. That is not so easily replicated on Mt. St. James.

Hate to be a nattering nabob of negativity on this but having been at the post-commencement reception at the DCU, twice ... it was not very pleasant. people are herded from the DCU arena to the convention center essentially through single hallway. The convention center was packed with graduates, faculty, staff, and 5000 - 6000 guests. It was very difficult to find anyone to offer congratulations and say some goodbyes. It was nice to bump into Crucis #1 in 2019 at the DCU, I suspect I could have done that on campus as well.
The criteria they use to judge the reception at DCU a success vs. being on campus on the Quad & Fenwick lawn or even Hogan are beyond me.
Next year the PCPA opens so in the event of inclement weather, they could create a 3-headed gathering space of the PCPA, Hogan, & the Jo. They are areas familiar to students so they can allocate academic departments across the 3 sites to meet & greet faculty and graduates could plan where to meet with friends and families instead of the free for all that is the DCU.
Just my opinion.

Holy Cross wins annual awards and is typically in the top of the rankings for having the most aesthetic / beautiful / well manicured college campus in the country.
On a day where the school can really shine, they ship all graduates and their friends and family to a dark arena in the middle of Worcester.
Who makes this decision?
