George Washington University Ditches ‘Colonials’ Moniker

 I would suggest the new nickname as the “Monuments”. It would be perfect for the basketball team when they play as a bunch of stiffs 😂

Other A-10 schools such as UMass and St Bonaventure have changed their nicknames. UMass was once the Redmen with a native chief as mascot. SBU previously went by the moniker Brown Indians and had a native mascot.

UMass did exhibit backbone later when student protesters demanded the Minuteman be cancelled because Minutemen were all white males with guns. The Minuteman survived in Amherst (and in Foxboro after Patriots touchdowns) while the Crusader had his horse shot out from underneath him in Worcester.

All the military regiments raised by the various provinces, e.g., Rhode Island province, the New Hampshire province, for the French and Indian War were known as provincial regiments.  Most did not include provincial in the the unit name, though Pennsylvania's regiments did.  Ships were known as provincial ships.

When Washington participated in Braddock's expedition. he did so as commander of the Virginia Regiment, a provincial regiment.

No units with 'colonial' in their name can be found in the list of provincial forces that were raised by the individual provinces.    See the long list and lineage:

Loyalist regiments that allied with the British during the Revolutionary War are known as provincial troops, in contrast to Continental troops.  Some were variously called militias, volunteers, or loyalists.  (There were units of Negro Volunteers, Roman Catholic Volunteers). None were called Colonials.

With respect to Loyalist units, perhaps the college ought to investigate whether the Fenwick who organized Fenwick's Dragoons, a Loyalist unit, has any relationship to Benedict Fenwick.  After all, the good bishop had named his college after a fraudulent relic, a relic foisted on the Catholics of Boston by a French priest who was virulently anti-Jesuit.  How many strikes should Fenwick get before he's called out, like Fr. Mulledy?

The Maryland Fenwicks of Benedict Fenwick appear to be related to the South Carolina Fenwicks of Fenwick's Loyalist dragoons. Both families have their roots in the Fenwicks of Northumberland.
