Did St John's really contract that much==from 29,000 to just over 17?

Maybe it never was 29,000. That was my memory which I’ve posted multiple times is suspect. Or maybe my memory is wrong and I never said that before.😉😂

In any case, St. John’s is NOT a small college by any standard.

I can see PC and maybe Seton Hall as a "smaller private school," but not St. John's which used to have the distinction of being the single largest Catholic University in the country with something like 29,000 enrollment. Just checked: undergrad: 13,333, grad: 4,258, total: 17,591 Not a small private school. Compare that to Michigan, Ohio State or Wisconsin. And the state schools have hundreds of thousands of followers who aren't even alum. Private schools don't have this to anywhere close to an extent. Sure, up until the early 2000's, you got the sense that St. John's was "NYC's Team" and they did have a strong network of "subway alum" (perfect context for the term). But no one cares about St. John's anymore. There's really not much of a local following anymore, at least not like when I was growing up and even more so before then. I've also never met a St. John's grad student who gave a rat's rump about the Red Storm. From a fundraising perspective, St. John's is not going to be able to be in the same arena as the power basketball schools that I mentioned in previous post.

St. John's still averaged 6,236 in 2019-2020 season. That is roughly only 500 people behind UCLA. fs.ncaa.org/Docs/stats/m_basketball_RB/2021/Attend.pdf

MSG is a very popular destination for opposing fans. Gillette Stadium didn't have the same cache for UMass Football. Then again, there's no Broadway in Foxboro.

No Broadway or Rockefeller Center but plenty of car dealerships. And the opposing fans in UMASS' case were the likes of Bowling Green, Central Michigan and Akron. The best crowds UMASS got at Gillette were when they were still in the CAA and played UNH there.

I think the biggest FBS Foxboro crowd for UMass might have been UNH after UMass moved up to FBS.

I wonder if A) UMass is ducking HC, or B) HC is not interested because they can get a much higher gusrantee elsewhere for their annual FBS game or, C) no different reason then why we don't play Maine or Stony Brook?

The correct answer(s) would be A & B.

The factual answer is UMess is fine getting paid a mil to get hammered, but doesn't want to pay out to lose to 1AA's any longer.
