I heard from some local students that Anna Maria has shut down their music program without telling incoming freshmen beforehand.
It's a shame to see another Catholic college close down one of its liberal arts programs.

I have a hard time blaming Anna Maria for the decision. The timing maybe and I will wait for official reports about it. But if Becker College which had roots back to 1784 in the adjacent town of Leicester failed, Anna Maria has to be in full survival mode and may not be able to be as gracious as they would like with cuts like this.
The current status of the Worcester Consortium for Higher Education is murky to me. If it's still flourishing then Anna Maria students could take music courses at other member schools. However I seem to recall the colleges have been pulling away from supporting the Consortium and have adopted more of an every man for himself approach.

I understand financial considerations. I've just heard from kids that incoming freshmen who wanted to major in music were only informed as of recently. That's a really hard spot to be in as a recent high school grad, and I think Anna Maria could have handled the transition better if that's the case.

You start to chip away at the soul of a college when you start cutting majors. You would think Anna Maria would have the whole metro Boston/Worcester/Springfield area to draw on for adjunct Professors who are working professional musicians, but then again enough Professors who are academically credentialed for accreditation purposes might be in short supply.
