"outside forces" have had an enormous impact on HC's sports programs. On so many levels....the number and aggressiveness of schools determined to compete with us for talent has expanded greatly, some potential competitors have been willing to throw tons of money at their sports programs, the pressure of Title IX cannot be overemphasized, the value of Liberal Arts has been challenged, etc. In fact, the effect of outside forces far outweighs internal factors at HC. For example, the cost of entry to the Big Time in bball (Big East) was something we wisely rejected. It would have been a disaster for us to attempt to compete in the Big East. It could have changed the character of the school--for the worse. Of course, you are welcome to your opinion. I disagree. HC's decisions contributed significantly to our overall competitive decline. For starters, we decided to: 1) invest peanuts in facilities for decades; 2) join the PL, jettison scholarships and include our premiere sport in the league; and 3) adopt the AI to appease the Ivy League. Now, you can say these were all smart decisions but to me there's little doubt it significantly harmed our athletic program. You keep mentioning the liberal arts angle but as was discussed in another thread that doesn't hold much water when you look at the numbers. You can assert the Big East would have been a disaster all you want as I can assert otherwise. Have outside forces impacted HC. Yes. But HC decisions make the impact far worse than it needed to be. Absolutely.

If this has been posted somewhere else already, my apologies. Saw it for the first time today. Those highlights brought back a lot of memories. Thanks for sharing. That video should show the younger posters why some of us are so frustrated by what HC football has become and why we still harbor hope that we could be a national contender at the 1-AA level again.

HC hoops. I think the questioner is Kevin Shea from Channel 3 in Worcester. Perhaps one of our Worcester area posters can confirm.

Yep that's Kevin Shea. He's done great work for many years and always seems to do great pieces on HC sports.

Gordie is a great guy and a terrific ambassador for HC. Total class through and through. Some wonderful shots of his exploits on the field and the crowds at FF in those days really send you back. Very much looking forward to seeing the "The Throwback" 30 for 30.

In conjunction with the 30 for 30 short coming out Monday, Mike Philbrick '96 has written an article about Coach Carter that should be available on the ESPN website on Monday as well

Just back from Boston lunch and screening. Full house to watch a very well done piece. Nice moderated panel with Gordie, Gregg Burke and Mike Phil bricks of ESPN. All Crusaders will love it. I went to the screening last night on campus. Three former players from the class of 88 were there. Jim Andreoli (Gordie's former roommate) was the only one I recognized. Also a bunch of current football players. Definitely worth taking the 12 minutes to watch it next week

Ken Baldyga and Pete Rojcewicz, both of HC class of 1970, pose with Gordie Lockbaum after preview showing Nov. 28 at HC Seelos Theater of new ESPN "30 by 30 Short" on "Gordie Lockbaum - The Throwback " scheduled to be aired on ESPN next week. A crowd of around 100 - 200 attended the preview airing and enjoyed a panel discussion about Gordie's two-time consideration for the Heisman Trophy as a throwback 2-way player at HC in the late 1980's. The panel included Gordie, Gregg Burke, HC's SID at the time, and ESPN producer Mike Philbrick, HC Class of 1996.

when is this airing on espn? scheduled for release Monday. Because it's a 30 for 30 short, I have no clue on if or when it would be televised. Best bet would be to check it out on line. Also, by going through the website, you can read the companion piece about Coach Carter

My classmate who attended the lunch viewing yesterday reported that a short will be done on Coach Carter as well. I believe the Coach Carter piece is going to be an article written by Mike Philbrick coming out Monday as well in conjunction with the Lockbaum film. No firm plans on this time to do a short on Coach Carter
