and this from Marist
"...a swastika was drawn on a bathroom stall, and a woman reported being accosted with shouts of "Go back to Africa." Many colleges and universities around the country are reporting similar incidents."

Yes, but the hounds have been let loose and I will not say more as it might become "political."

Note that over a dozen of the incidents of the past ten days gave been proven to be hoaxes - and many more cannot be confirmed. It's scary when it is legitimate - and equally scary when a hoax.

There are evil people in the country who are paying some of these miscreants to start protests , disrupt peaceful gatherings, create discord in the country. That is not true in every single one of these cases but it is undeniably true in some

Is this the same country as two weeks ago ? Nope, a better one. No more Kennedys, Clintons or Bushes in power.

Is this the same country as two weeks ago ? Yes, of course it is. It's just underlying racism and shades of white supremacy have been legitimized and empowered in the hearts and minds of those that believe in such things. There will be more incidents like this as boundaries that were previously thought to be off-limits are tested. And many of the "incidents" will unfortunately be hoaxes.

Sadly, some of these incidents have involved the handicapped.

This George Will piece captures the Zeitgeist of today's college campuses nicely.

Sad, so sad. I am a history major grad from the "prestigious" College of the Holy Cross and back in the 1960's I loved (still do) American history but the course offerings were mostly European and especially Russian history. I think the only U.S. history course that I got to take was "History of the American South" with Professor Branfon.

How could you have passed on Dr Grattan's U.S. Diplomatic History (seminar)...or the Social History of the US? Having taken a tough course in U.S. history in high school, and being primarily interested in European history, I managed to do both. Hopefully, I've since made up for that lapse by extensive reading on topics in U.S. history. As for the swastika in the bathroom stall, at the risk of seeming insensitive, I'll just note that all sorts of things end up scrawled in men's stalls. When I was in law school, I recall that some fool had etched a graphic image of a woman on the side of a stall and that some other idiot had added a caption indicating that it was a picture of the dean's secretary. As for HC stall graffiti, the one that sticks in my mind was in the depths of the Dinand Library, which said something to the effect that a student who was sitting there on the night of the St. John's game didn't deserve to call himself a crusader.

Dr.Grattan was the motivating factor for my teaching history for what is now the 50th year. Finally found a moment to pass on my congratulations as well. I was a teacher, counselor for 50 years, a coach for 41 and a few books authored/edited thrown in there as well. I retired last year, but I still work with students in several capacities. I can appreciate and applaud your dedication. Well done, hoops. What is your next act?

I assure you that if I had the opportunity and scheduling to have allowed it, I would have taken all U.S. history courses. My recollection was there were not that many and those that existed filled up before I had a shot or my scheduling of other required courses made it a no-go. If it was a seminar, I probably didn't have the grades to qualify!
On a very serious note, Nazi symbols have no place on the Holy Cross campus and hopefully it/they have been removed and if the person(s) who did this are identified, removed from campus. Catholics were enemies of the Nazis though there were, in fact, Nazis who were nominally called Catholics. But the campus today has a much more diverse and richer student and faculty base and Jewish students and minorities should not have this inflicted on them. In fact, no one should have to see these symbols and have no place on a Jesuit Catholic college.
As for the subject of graffiti, on a lighter note, and I know I have posted this before, one of the heartiest laughs I had while a student was in the student laundry under Campion. There was a bathroom down there and some wag freshly carved into the wood stalls: "Some day I am going to own this place! Ray Swords '38." Father Swords was the president of the College at the time and indeed was a graduate from the Class of '38.

All you retirees should consider the Ignatian Volunteer Corps who could use your help and expertise.
