Thanks for the explanation. I always thought you were on the active team or not except for injuries.
You’d think the NFL teams could afford to have all the players “active” and take them to the games in uniform. So they suit up fewer than the NCAA teams?

Watched part of the Lions-Pats game and at one point the Lions had 5 DBs injured and out of the game and was wondering what they were going to do if they ran out - have Kalif play DB?

Multiple people on the Twitter were suggesting Kalif play DB during the game. I had no idea why.

Benton Whitley just signed by the Minnesota Vikings to the 53 man squad.
Vikes looking to beef up on the defensive front.

Whitley and/or his agent must be doing something right. He went from cut by the Rams to signed to their practice squad to signed to Chiefs 53 man to signed to Vikes 53 man. He must have been cut by the Chiefs after his 3 week mandatory stint on the Chiefs 53 with hopes of resigning him to their practice squad but now he’s on the Vikings’ 53 man.

Too bad the Vikes/Pats is a road game. No free tickets for the Brady Minnesota relatives this year.

Unfortunately, the Vikings waived Benton this past Sunday. The only field time he got was during the pre-season with the Rams. He was put on the Chiefs and Vikings active roster each for 3 weeks but was de-activated prior to each game.
Really rooting for Benton, hope someone picks him up.

I feel like the fact that he has been on two active rosters is a good sign for Benton. Means there was competition for his services so teams had to put him on the real roster to land him. Once they do that, they are committed to keep him there for 3 weeks.

Looks like the Vikings re-signed Benton to the practice squad this past Monday.
From a Vikings web-site.
Not too long ago, the Vikings decided to move on from Benton Whitley. That decision coincided with elevating tight end Nick Muse and adding corner Tay Gowan. Nevertheless, the team clearly wants to keep Whitley around, for the Vikings have decided to add the pass rusher to their practice squad.
Fans will be forgiven if they aren’t as familiar with the young outside linebacker. The team’s website offers a reasonably robust background:
Benton Whitley signs to the Minnesota’s active roster from Kansas City’s practice squad, originally signed with the Los Angeles Rams as an undrafted free agent in 2022, before being waived on Aug. 30, 2022. The Springfield, Massachusetts, native attended Holy Cross from 2017-21, where he appeared in 42 games, registering 111 total tackles (79 solo), 26.5 tackles for loss, 15.5 sacks, two passes defensed and one forced fumble.
Interested readers can find more information on the team’s website.
To be clear, the Vikings’ decision to add the pass rusher to the practice doesn’t mean Whitley is definitely going to be a contributor moving forward. Rather, it’s an indication that the team wants to have depth at outside linebacker and that they think Whitley has potential to become a contributor.
At present, the top two spots are manned by Za’Darius Smith and Danielle Hunter. After 10 games, the edge rusher pair have combined for 15.5 sacks, a total that’s a touch more modest given that they were shutout in the recent Dallas game.

Too bad the Vikings re-signed Whitley to their practice squad. After he was released, I was hoping the Lions, who are thin at linebacker, would sign him. Would be great to see Benton and Kalif together in the Honolulu Blue and Silver.

Would be great to see Benton and Kalif together in the Honolulu Blue and Silver. If a team wants to sign a guy from someone else’s practice squad, they just need to keep him on the active roster for three weeks so I don’t think being on a practice squad hurts his chances of getting to an active roster of a spot opens up and a team like the Lions thinks he might be able to help.

The Vikings canned their DC, apparently Whitley's still in their plans regardless.

vikingswire.usatoday.com/lists/minnesota-vikings-tennessee-titans-stock-up-stock-down/Stock Up: Benton Whitley Benton Whitley had a game that went under the radar. Coming off the edge, Whitley consistently beat the man in front of him again and again. Whitley forced one pressure on Malik Willis on a third down but the stat sheet doesn’t tell the whole story. He impacted the game beyond the stat sheet by forcing runs back to his teammates, getting Willis to step up in the pocket before he wanted to and beating his man to get into the backfield. Whitley was consistently pushing whoever was in front of him backward and controlling the line of scrimmage. That kind of effort can find you a place, if not on the 53-man roster, somewhere on the practice squad.

Among FCS Edge DE /OLB Rookies from the NE worth noting: Titus Leo (Wagner) had an outstanding game for the Colts last night. He and Liam played a lot together. Malik Hamm (Lafayette) is having a very strong camp and preseason with the Ravens - also noted in several “stock up” articles. Truman Jones (Harvard) has made some nice plays for the Chiefs.
I wouldn’t be surprised if one of these guys makes a 53 man roster.
