I don't know . . . oh, yeah, this season, 2 of 11 games for us. A 21-20 loss to Bucknell and a 21-20 win against Georgetown. Yes--I forgot the smiley face but we know that a significant percentage of games are decided by OT, 1, 2 or 3 points; clearly an exceptional place kicker can make a huge difference in a team's W-L record. It's that simple, I think.

To drop back in time to 1966:
HC 7 - Dartmouth 6 -- winning margin Mike Kaminski's PAT HC 17 - BU 14 -- winning margin a Mike Kaminski FG HC 16 - UMass 14 -- difference was provided by Mike Kaminski's three field goals. HC 32 - BC 26 -- six points from Mike Kaminski's 44 yard field goals.
In any case, whether to sign a kicker depends on how good he looks. This fall Northwestern used a scholarship to sign Charlie Kuhbander of Springboro, OH, who's reportedly the fifth ranked HS kicker in the nation.

According to an ESPN article written five years ago, very few FBS kickers were NOT on scholarship. Don't know for sure whether or not FCS and/or PL kickers are predominantly scholarship as well. Some here may have that inside info, I don't. While it is clearly essential that the placekicking position be adequately filled on any team at the Division I level, one issue with spending scholarships on kickers is that if the player doesn't work out, they are completely useless. If a recruit at any other position doesn't reach expectations, chances are they possess the athletic ability to change positions or can at least help out on scout teams. Anyway, here's the article. www.espn.com/college-sports/recruiting/football/story/_/id/7335060/kickers-often-booted-side-comes-recruiting

Colgate 29 HC 28 (2006) -- Mike DeSantis' would be game-winning attempt goes off the helmet of Aaron Jones. A win would've given HC the PL title. UMass 45 HC 42 (2008) -- UMass' Armando Cuko, brother of HC kicking walk-on Llazar Cuko, drills a 42 yarder to prevent OT at Fitton. Yale 31, HC 28 (2008) -- Best kicker in school history, Matt Partain, misses a 37 yarder in OT that would've tied it to send to another frame (negated a last minute 4th quarter comeback). HC 27, Lafyaette 26 (2008) -- Lafayette kicker Rodriguez, who was phenomenal btw, missed a PAT after Leopards took 26-20 lead with 2 min left. The rest was history. HC 28, Lafayette 26 (2009) -- In the de facto PL championship game, two early missed PATs were the difference in the game.

That UMass game felt like a true D1 experience. Fitton under the lights, awesome crowd, awesome weather, against a respected long time local rival. It was a gut wrenching loss. I was standing under the goalpost when that kicked sailed through. Would have been a major win for the program. Always the bridesmaid it seems.
Go watch clips of that game on YouTube. It's absolutely unfathomable as to why that game didn't exemplify clearly why a top priority for the program was to schedule home games at night, with or without our own lights. But I digress. Ah but it's just so idiotic that we don't have lights.
