A story in the Worcester T&G says a developer is making some progress with plans to turn the Worcester Memorial Auditorium, (former home of HC hoops), into an eSports Palace. He still has to raise a lot of money. It would also include rehabbing the Little Theater. I watched Jimmy Walker drop 48 on the Cross from the back row of the Little Theater. I think the Little Theater sign is still visible out back when you drive by. It would be great for the city if the Aud could be brought back to life. It's hard to look at such an historic building in disrepair.

Its two sister buildings are still functioning. Springfield Memorial Auditorium and Lowell Memorial Auditorium.
There are probably some others around that share the same basic design

It was a sad lookin' place when the Bombardiers played there a decade after HC moved to the HC.
That was nearly 40 years ago; hope the place isn't beyond repair.

The city kept it heated and safe from the elements I assume. It was used for records storage and served as juvenile court for awhile I believe. Photos from an open house a few years ago when the city was seeking proposals looked good.

My HS graduation was from the Aud in (gasp) 1970..I always wished the city would play HS hoops there..At least a City Wide Tourney with the schools located in the city limits..That end of Main Street is going thru a lot of changes. The old court house next to the Aud is now appartments, and a new Courthouse is just up the street....The old Worcester Voke building has been transformed into apartments, former coach Bill Carmody resided there.. New restaurants and shops have opened of recent.. All in all, Worcester is being revitalized, not the city it was 15 years ago!

Thoroughly enjoyed the city and had the right opportunity arisen in the area would've been happy living there post-graduation. If I ever left NY, 3 places I'd consider living would be: 1) Portland ME 2) Worcester 3) Tampa/Bradenton/Sarasota area

It was a fun place to watch games in the late 60's and early 70's since we were pretty good. Lots of great games and packed houses. Especially entertaining in the balcony when my roommate, Buddy Venne, would throw up his 25 footers and the crowd would whistle as if a bomb was dropping. Too long ago. Happy Labor Day! KOT72

If I remember correctly, in that UCONN game Venne and hometown star. Bobby Boyd playing for UCONN each scored about 40 points and both teams scored over 100 points

I went to a Johnny Winter concert while at HC. I'm almost positive it was at the Aud. Amazing show. Johnny wouldn't stop playing so the police had the electricity shut off. We walked to and from the concert, not the most scenic of walks.

If I remember correctly, in that UCONN game Venne and hometown star. Bobby Boyd playing for UCONN each scored about 40 points and both teams scored over 100 points 12/20/1969 HC 122 UConn 104 Was looking for more detail on this game and found the following in an article about Worcester’s own Bobby Boyd, who was apparently a tremendous player who struggled with some personal demons. Although UConn lost 122-104, Boyd scored 36 points on 10 of 12 shooting from the field and 16 of 16 from the free-throw line. "That game was an example of what kind of player he was," Melody said. "He would shoot the jumper into you, embellish the contact and get to the foul line." Here’s the full article on Boyd from the Hartford Courant in 1997. www.courant.com/news/connecticut/hc-xpm-1997-08-19-9708190283-story.html

I hadn't heard of Boyd so I looked him up on sports-reference and then on the UConn site. At the UConn site I stumbled upon something I hadn't known: Walt Dropo, who had one of the greatest ever rookie seasons in MLB history in 1950, at age 27, had been a big basketball star at UConn. So we can add him to that informal list of "pro players who excelled at another sport in college" that we have discussed from time to time

I'm pretty sure it was Boyd who, the next year, netted his 1000th point, in a game at UConn against HC. The game was stopped soon thereafter...not to commemorate the moment, but because there was a bomb scare. Game finished w/o fans. www.uconnhooplegends.com/menslegends/GillespieRichard.html

Despite being only 5'11 Boyd could get his jumper off against anyone as he could really jump and could stop on a dime to create separation for his shot.

KOT I think we both were there for the UCONN game before Christmas when Buddy burned the nets and had 28 or 30 at halftime hours later I was hitch hiking to Akron, Ohio One sequence from that game is etched in my memory.
Buddy had hit something like 6 or 7 long bombs in a row. Totally on fire.
The ball got knocked out of bounds at mid court and UConn Coach Dee Rowe called time out to see if he could cool Venne off.
UConn came out of the TO in what looked like a box and one and Buddy was running all over the front court to shed his man.
Finally Buddy came running out to mid court and took the in-bounds pass. He was out 40 feet so his defender played a bit off him.
Buddy took about two dribbles and, when he saw his man was not coming put that far, he let fly from 30+ feet. SWISH!
I thought Dee Rowe would lose his mind.
Great memory.

Dee stepped away from coaching so he wouldn't lose his mind. Then he became Mr. Everything for UConn Athletics for another forty years or more as UConn grew into a national factor in multiple sports.
