today, September 14, 2022 is an exciting day of celebrations for our venue. We welcome Amica Insurance to be our official naming rights partner as we continue to be in the business of making memories and being a top entertainment destination for New England.

Yeah, and it's not the "Tappan Zee Bridge" anymore either...

It is for some of us. (Tappan Zee Bridge is certainly a better choice than a name put on by a now disgraced former politician to honor his own father.)

Well, while out to dinner, couldn't hear the many TVs on in the restaurant but our fellow alum, Ted Shallcross '95, was apparently the AMICA guy making the speeches. Ted doesn't take over as President/CEO (Senior or Exec VP now) until October if I recall correctly but his predecessor Bob DiMuccio, I guess wanted to give Ted the spotlight. Knowing both of them, they are good guys but Ted a little better because of his alma mater. Paging td128: let's get some 90-wide grads working at Amica, considered one of the best P&C insurers in the country!

Being a mutual company I'm sure Amica had all it's policy holder/owners vote on spending their money on naming rights.🤣

Having worked for a mutual insurance company almost 28 years, they have a Board of Directors who are authorized to make those kinds of decisions. Policyholders, like stock holders, could vote them out.
As a long time policyholder and former employee, no one asked me when Nationwide built the arena across the street and named it. In fact, I was still an employee there when they started building it and finally went into it for the first time when HC played in their NCAA play-in game.
But I know you weren’t serious anyway.😉

I imagine the venue will immediately start calling itself AMICA. Tickets and marketing will also be right on board. I would think it would take a while before the average person on the street jumps on board.
There's an outdoor venue in Mansfield MA that doesn't have stable naming partners. It is currently officially called the Xfinity Center. That is the place's 4th name in the last 25 years. At this point it's so confusing most people refer to it by its original name of Great Woods. The Providence Civic Center has been called the Dunk for 20 years now. People are used to it and on board. Just because AMICA wrote a big check doesn't mean some guy from Cranston is going to change his speech patterns. Maybe it's just me, but I have never referred to the baseball field at Holy Cross with the name of an insurance company

Some clarification about the Mario Cuomo Tappan Zee Bridge name. There is nothing new about having an individual's name on the bridge. The name of the bridge previously had been the Malcolm Wilson Tappan Zee Bridge. Mr. Wilson (a family friend & a fine man) was a Republican Lt. Gov. to Gov. Rockefeller. Upon Rockefeller's selection as VP, Mr Wison seved as governor for the remainder of the term. He lost his bid for election. After 20+ years of failure by the state government a beautiful new expansive bridge was built under the leadership of Gov. Andrew Cuomo. Getting that bridge built by an often impotent state government locked in relentless political infighting was an amazing feat. No governor before had been able to secure the funding through the fractious legislature. Court battles and environmental studies stood in the way. Yet, Gov. Andrew Cuomo was able to get that bridge built. New bridge, new name. Certainly Gov. Mario Cuomo a three term highly respected, nationally known governor merited having his name on that bridge. The fact that his son was governor should not have preluded Mr. Cuomo from receiving the honor post mortem. The naming fuss was merely a part of the back & forth political gamesmanship between the parties in Albany. Cuomo sounds good to me. Actually, it would have more appropriate to name it the Andrew Cuomo Tappan Zee Bridge. Probably some day the name will be changed again, this time to the George Pataki Tappan Zee Bridge. Tempest in a teapot. And, so it goes. HA!!!!

I remember the Malcolm Wilson name being attached to the bridge. I also remember that it was almost never used by anyone, even the bridge itself - which only had one small sign marking the honor. It was almost everywhere known as the Tappan Zee Bridge. That is why it still is that to some. I probably allowed my intense dislike for Andrew Cuomo (probably starting with his approval of a bill allowing infanticide by doctors of any child who survived an abortion - which was greeted by a standing ovation of the NY State Legislature). That is a separate issue. Your point about Mario Cuomo's contribution o the bridge is a good one and thank you for pointing that out. I will probably still simply refer to it as the Tappan Zee Bridge.

Rob, me too. Actually, I most commonly call it the TZ bridge. Probably it is best to have no individual's name on that bridge. Tappan Zee is fine with me.

I agree that Dunkin Donuts ( EXCUSE ME! It was changed to just "DUNKIN'"!) is ubiquitous here in RI and better known than AMICA. That said, I was pointing out how the spokesperson, future president & CEO of this very successful insurer based in RI is a Holy Cross alum. Let's celebrate that. As for bridges, we have a pretty long one connecting Jamestown with Newport called the "Newport-Pell Bridge" named subsequently after the late Sen. Claiborne Pell. Not sure anyone calls it the Pell bridge. Interesting fact that the toll each way is $6.00 UNLESS you have a RI EZ Pass, not an EZ Pass from any other jurisdiction, only RI, and then it's 83 cents.

I've been in Wilson's Woods, but never on the Malcom Wilson TZ bridge, just "Tappan Zee" It will be the Tappan Zee until I'm gone in my mind. That last part applies both with, and without, the oxford comma!
