This very young team is off to a good start. I am not sure about this score. According to the match stats, HC took 5 singles matches and 12 doubles match out of 9 total. That would make it6-3 would it not? All of the points came from sophomore and frosh players 3 freshman 5 sophomores 0 juniors 4 seniors Anyone want to guess how long it will be until our resident curmudgeon posts something negative?

Anyone want to guess how long it will be until our resident curmudgeon posts something negative? I don't think defeating a Division 3 team that went 4-10 last year is something to get really excited about. In fact, it's probably disconcerting that matches were dropped in the number one singles and doubles position. This program haven't registered a Division 1 win since October, 2018 and haven't won a PL match since 2010.

You are certainly entitled to that opinion. Did you notice they did take #2 through #6 singles? IIRC each match counts as 1 point, regardless of position.

Does the team have a head coach yet? I may have missed it, but I see that our departed former coach is still listed on the Women's tennis website. If not, for a team to get a 5-2 win over anyone without their own coach is still pretty good, no?

D1 Tennis has all the doubles matches combined count for one point. So if a school wins two doubles matches, they get the doubles point. Then you have six singles matches for the other six points. Thus, seven points.

Thank you for the explanation. I would never have figured that out since my tennis scoring background is limited to high school tennis. My granddaughter has started to play for her high school only this year *her third year at IHA, in NJ). They have 3 singles and two doubles for 5 points in a match.

The scoring for D-3 tennis is every match is worth one point...I got confused when covering it in the past too.

this team gets the least respect of our 27 - no coach (I think) / a total of 3 matches in the fall (when we have the better weather) / 3 pretty good frosh and nothing to say about their backgrounds on the roster page

I have 12 varsity tennis letters in my family.
Tennis is the ultimate red headed step child at HC.

Somebody must be guiding the tennis team but if the most loyal HC fans on Crossports can't find any communication about it that is disappointing.

I'd be more concerned about dropping the number three singles match. Any team can have a stud. More surprising that a D-III team would have depth than a superstar. If Serena Williams chose to go to Mt Holyoke, they could have won the number one singles match in every meet and lost every other match

Just because you had me curious, the Mt Holyoke player who played #1 yesterday had a singles match record of 7-6 and doubles record of 5-9 last year.
And now I feel weird for being on the Mt Holyoke women's tennis page.

It really shouldn't be surprising that Mt. Holyoke, Smith and Wellesley have some good athletes. I suspect if they wanted to structure their admissions departments to favor skilled athletes like the Ivies do they could make some noise in various D-3 NCAA tournaments. I can't recall reading about any of them going far in any sports like I have noticed Tufts, Williams, WPI, Amherst, Nichols, etc.

If you don’t make a big deal out of women's sports at a women's college...it's puzzling.
