So, we have the EBW Classic at Polar Park and now the President's Council dinner will not be on campus (I know, it was in NYC one year) but will be at Union Station in downtown Worcester. Someone is REALLY trying to rebuild the community relationship it seems.

I stayed at the relatively new AC Marriott for Homecoming weekend having multiple events that I was going to including the Coaches Night at the pizza place (Volturno's) which was, like Union Station, an 8-10 minute walk. Not bad IMO but locals would be better to opine.

Maybe there are so many people giving money to the school the council has outgrown the ball room. (I have no clue about the relative capacity of Hogan vs Union Station)
or
Maybe the event is going to be environmentally friendly and everyone will arrive via mass transit trains
At least it's not a Zoom dinner

The building itself is attractive, inside and out, but it's surrounded by train tracks on two sides, I-290 on one and Washington Square rotary in front. Lots of public parking nearby. Less than a 10 minute walk to Shrewbury Street (east) and downtown Worcester (west). A relatively safe area.

The former waiting room at Union Station is beautiful. The entire station is one of the few really great pieces of old architecture still left in Worcester (Mechanics Hall would be another). The old waiting room unfortunately doesn't get a lot of use other than an occasional event. It is sadly most days just a space for commuters to walk through on their way to the train. This building was long empty and in decay for decades. The tops of the towers had been removed as their weight was affecting the integrity of the structure. A great job was done renovating it. The two towers were even recreated using low weight fiberglass materials. Union Station is connected to its own parking garage on the other side of the tracks. If you park there, you do not even have to go outside.

It was a private collection of political memorabilia in a second floor room.

Apparently not the case because the invitation clearly states that there is limited attendance and it is on a "first come, first serve" basis. So, it's not for a larger size. And the dinners historically were not in the Hogan ballroom but in Kimball which has a much larger capacity than the ballroom or apparently Union Station from the looks of the photo. Nope, pretty confident this is another reach out to Worcester.

The President's Council mixes up things every year to keep folks coming back. This is a part of that.

The management team from the former Maxwell Silverman's runs the event space at Worcester Union Station. Their web site indicates that the Grand Hall has a capacity of 600 for events.

Quoting myself, I am sure that Phreek was on the Zoom meeting with new BoT Chair, Helen Boucher, She made very clear and specifically said that one of Vince Rougeau's goals is to work on the Holy Cross relationship with Worcester. She also said, what I had heard Vince say as well and others might have misconstrued that he wants to be in the top 25 of liberal arts colleges in the country. No, in fact, he wants to be the #1 liberal arts college in the country. And, unlike his predecessors, while he doesn't see the rankings as the "be all and end all," he believes they are very important and where he thinks we can get some leverage is the "reputation" aspect of those rankings. Helen said or implied that this amounts to marketing Holy Cross to other colleges and universities.
Oh, the PC chairs both pushed the Union Station reception/dinner. This location is clearly not because the PC has outgrown Kimball or any other reasons.

Among the locations for the PC Dinner, was the Hart Center Arena in 1976. A tent was erected inside the arena to hide the seats and bleachers and the hoops. The following year the dinner returned to the Hogan Ballroom.

But it is where the people are, which is why they built the park there. They built the park in Worcester because there are a lot of people there. They built in that neighborhood because there was a large parcel of open, inexpensive land With a potpourri of toxic industrial waste on it, as I recall. Cleaning up that brownfield was part of the $160 million price tag I presume which will always be a positive. There has been a trend to build new football stadiums in the suburbs with easy highway access for the large once weekly football crowds and room to park and tailgate, with a trend to build new baseball stadiums in urban areas with access to public transportation and near restaurants and bars for spin off business for the smaller but daily crowds. Polar was actually jammed in to a postage stamp of a stadium lot with no large adjacent paring lots but that fits the in-city baseball park model like Fenway and Camden Yards.
