The ball park actually sits across the street from the factory on basically employee parking. Most of the factory was torn down, but a small section is still up and running. The garage, future hotel, etc are on what was once the factory. The factory dated back to the late 1800's when regulations were looser than today, so I'm sure there was plenty of industrial waste for that century - and it doesn't all go straight down.
That being said, I'm not sure if there was a cleanup. I don't remember reading about one - and the rare times I drove by during construction, it didn't seem like there was enough digging to clean things up

I seem to remember reading, as LS pointed out, the cleanup of the lot drove the price tag for the project up considerably.

I really hope any downtown housing options are actually for those who “prefer living and experiencing downtown Worcester.” If you start forcing kids to live there, you are going to have some angry parents on your hands. Especially those in the class of 2026 who are already jammed liked sardines into antiquated dorm rooms. Follow that up with forced living in downtown Worcester and you likely have a serious problem on your hands.

I totally agree, downtown housing should be by choice

I totally agree, downtown housing should be by choice There is currently a shuttle bus and would obviously have to be for any students living downtown. I heard an anecdote of a current sophomore who was placed at The Edge who had not requested it and didn’t want it. Not certain that story is accurate but the school needs to think carefully about how it manages housing as they think about how many students to admit and where they find swing space as they try to renovate all of the older dorms.

Wyman Gordon sold the former factory site on Madison St. to Madison Properties for $6.1 million in 2019. Eighteen acres of land on which Wyman Gordon had demolished the factory buildings and 'environmentally cleaned up' prior to the sale. www.wbjournal.com/article/woosox-developer-buys-wyman-gordon-site-for-61mMadison Properties broke ground for the first building in 2021. This is a 228 unit residential building. spectrumnews1.com/ma/worcester/news/2021/07/21/soma-polar-park-madison-worcesterThe owner of Madison Properties is the co-owner of the new Jesuit residence to be built on Kendig St. --------------------------- The Edge opened circa 2017-18. This is off-campus student housing, not limited to Holy Cross. The appeal supposedly is for upperclassmen who do not want to live on-campus, and in an environment with fewer restrictions. www.edgeunionstation.com/ www.edgeunionstation.com/worcester-ma-apartments/edge-union-station/------------------------------- For each of the four oldest Easy St. residence halls that are taken off-line for a year for reconstruction, Holy Cross needs approximately 200 beds of new student housing. These new beds are coming from the two new residence halls under construction on City View St. (144 beds) and conversion of Ciampi Hall to a student residence (75+ beds.) However Brooks Hall houses 400 students, and for Brooks Hall to be reconstructed, an additional new student residence hall would need to be constructed, if Brooks were taken off-line. The reconstructed residence halls will likely have fewer beds than present. The college has apparently decided that no new residence halls will be built on the 'old campus'. The new residence halls on City View reflect that decision. Apparently, an option to build an additional floor on the four oldest Easy St. dorms was/is being considered. This could restore the total number of beds to something close to the present. (Note that these design considerations did not factor in the unexpected size of the class of 2026.) If one were to simultaneously take two of the oldest Easy St. dorms off-line, or if Brooks were to be taken off-line, this would require a new residence hall larger than the one presently being constructed on City View St. This is where potentially a new off-campus residence hall comes into play. Brooks*, Lehy, Hanselman, Healy, and Clark are the five oldest post-WWII dorms. * Brooks is older than Loyola, but Loyola was originally constructed as the Jesuit residence and has en-suite bathrooms. I suspect Loyola is low on the reconstruction list. This still leaves Wheeler, and the now almost-ancient suites in Alumni and Carlin. ( do not know how many of these suites do not have a bathroom.)
